Job Summary

The property and evidence component has a variety of critical responsibilities and administrative duties within the property and evidence functions of the police department. These responsibilities include maintaining the evidentiary chain of custody and integrity of evidence and property. Under general supervision this position will collect, receive, record, account for, store, safeguard, collect, load, transport, verify, release and disburse evidence, and found or abandoned property. This position maintains separate property areas and performs work as required

The evidence collection component includes collecting, preserving and analyzing evidence from a crime scene including fingerprints and bodily fluids. The responsibilities include cataloging and preserving evidence for transfer to crime labs, and preparing detailed reports that explain findings and investigation methods.

The Records Management component Involves developing and managing procedures that promote sound, efficient, and economical records management, which includes creation, organization of, and access to records; maintenance, retention and disposition of administrative records; and security and privacy of records. Supports the management of recorded information, consults with users to develop compliant, secured and trustworthy record keeping systems that are efficiently maintained, establishes processes and guidelines to dispose of records when their administrative, legal, audit, regulatory and historical value have ceased. Ensures compliance to standards, applicable laws and internal policies, and operating procedures for consistent creation, maintenance and use, and disposition of University records. May include classifying, storing, securing, and destroying (or in some cases, archival preservation) records or consulting others on how to apply best practices to such activities.

Employee may come into close proximity to blood borne pathogens through evidence collection, deposits of syringes and blood samples that may be placed in the evidence room refrigerator.


Department Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 60,000 people at University and contract locations. Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre- and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Children’s Hospital; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute.  UCSF is considered one of the nation’s premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. Required Qualifications

  • Valid California Drivers License.
  • Complete POST Certified Field Evidence Class within one year of hire.
  • Complete POST Records Class within one year of hire.
  • Significant experience with automated storage and retrieval systems, and  electronic records.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite and general office applications.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Ability to handle challenging situations with tact and diplomacy.
  • Ability to work independently, handling multiple priorities and meeting established timeframes.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use a high level of discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Prohibits unauthorized access to records containing personal or confidential information.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates degree in related field and / or equivalent experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of current archival and records management principles and practices; considerable knowledge of creating and maintaining databases.
