Staff Research Associate
Job Description
Microbiology and Immunology
Full Time

Job Summary
The Gross lab studies gene function and network organization in model bacterial systems, including the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis . We use high-throughput chemical genomic and genetic interaction methods to assess gene function on a global scale. Projects in the lab are focused on determining novel interactions between essential- or non-essential genes and environmental conditions in B. subtilis . Hits from a CRISPRi knockdown library in these projects will open multiple experimental avenues to validate and expand on potential relationships between gene networks and environmental input.
The Staff Research Associate (SRA) works closely with and provides vital technical support to graduate students and post-doctoral colleagues in carrying out high-throughput studies, including executing experiments, collecting data, processing data, and analyzing results.
Key specific responsibilities include: (1) carrying out high-throughput screening protocols; (2) preparing required media, plates, chemicals and other reagents; (3) growing, transferring, making and freezing stocks of bacterial cultures; (4) analytical experiments using PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, and other molecular biology techniques; and perform other duties as assigned.

Research in the department focuses on areas related to infectious diseases, immunology, and cancer. Our department also provides advanced research training to Postdoctoral Fellows. Graduate students working towards their Ph.D. degree are enrolled in the Herbert W. Boyer Program in Biological Sciences (PIBS) or the Biomedical Sciences (BMS) Graduate Programs, depending on their research emphasis.
