Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute that marshals some of the world's brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions. IPAC, part of the Physics, Math, and Astronomy Division at Caltech, provides science operations, user support, data and archive services, and scientific vision to maximize discovery with observatories both in space and on the ground.

We invite applications from talented researchers in the field of extragalactic astrophysics to work on UV/U-band HST programs related to galaxy evolution and Reionization:

  • the “Parallel Ionizing Emissivity (PIE)” survey: a 400 orbit HST pure-parallel program to estimate the escape fraction of ionizing radiation at z~3; and
  • a medium WFC3/UV program, “Escaping Lyman Continuum from the Overdensities of Extreme Emission Line Galaxies at z~2.2” 

The successful applicant will work with Dr. Harry Teplitz, Dr. Anahita Alavi, and Dr. James Colbert at IPAC, as well as international collaborations for each project. They will be responsible for data processing, analysis and interpretation, and publication of scientific results. They will also have a fraction of their time for independent research and will have access to observing facilities including Palomar.

Appointment Details

  • The appointment will be for two years, and an additional year is possible contingent on performance and funding availability.
  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. degree in astrophysics, planetary sciences, or related field by the starting date (Spring 2023)
  • Prior research experience with space and/or ground-based imaging data, and in extragalactic astronomy is strongly preferred. The ability to work effectively in a team environment is also preferred.
