The Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies (CIMAS) of the University of Miami invites applicants for an Assistant Scientist position in Marine Biology and Fisheries.  This position is situated at the NOAA Fisheries Southeast Fisheries Science Center Marine Mammal and Turtle Division located in Miami, FL and will collaborate with scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Universidad Veracruzana, and Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.

We seek an experienced and productive researcher to join our group and participate in a project to assess the abundance and spatiotemporal distribution of marine mammals in the Gulf of Mexico.  The SEFSC Marine Mammal Branch is conducting a broad-scale study of cetacean occurrence and density in the Gulf of Mexico using a sparse array of moored passive acoustic monitoring units.  The incumbent will develop methods to use these data to develop spatially explicit habitat models and evaluate trends in abundance estimates for marine mammals to support environmental planning and impact assessments by a variety of agencies.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in oceanography, marine biology, quantitative statistics or related discipline and at least 1 year of relevant postdoctoral experience. The position requires demonstrated experience with statistical analysis to investigate species-environment relationships, development of complex statistical models that properly account for spatial and temporal autocorrelation, and experience with the development of tools to visualize and interpret model outcomes.  Necessary skills include working knowledge of data management systems (e.g., Oracle, SQLServer, Postgres), Geographic Information Systems (e.g., ESRI ArcGIS, QGIS), and statistical and/or mathematical programming languages (e.g., R, Matlab). Demonstrated experience developing complex statistical models that integrate diverse data across multiple spatial and temporal scales is required. Applicants with experience in conducting studies of marine mammal habitats and abundance, experience working with passive acoustic or other non-traditional data for density estimation, or experience working with ecological time-series data are preferred.

Apply on line at: www.miami.edu/careers .  Curriculum Vitae and the contact information for 3 people who can provide letters of recommendation are required.
