POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT


Job Position Description

Dr. Kristen Seward is seeking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a project funded by the US Department of Education (Jacob K. Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Program). Project members will implement the HOPE Scale (Gentry et al., 2015) for identifying and the Scholar Identity Model (SIM; Whiting, 2006, 2014) for serving students with gifts, creativity, and talents from underrepresented populations in Purdue University’s Gifted Education Research and Resource Institute (GER2I) summer enrichment programming and their home schools. Project goals include the following:

  • To investigate the GER2I Summer Residential + SIM experience enabling the use of robust methods to examine the treatment’s effect on the confidence, abilities, school performance/achievement, and educational aspirations of rural, Diné, Lakota, and Ojibwe students; Urban Black and Latino students; students from low-income families; and students with twice-exceptionality.
  • To integrate the SIM into GER2I Summer Residential programming;
  • To develop and integrate SIM during the school year for students who have attended the GER2I Summer Residential program;
  • To increase student achievement;
  • To enhance students’ scholar identities; and
  • To provide a model for educators across the country to identify, academically enrich, and develop the scholar identities of underserved youth.

Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work with the Project Director and her team to:

  • design project curricula based on the SIM for use by teachers in GER2I Summer Residential and in the partner schools,
  • design and conduct onsite and/or virtual training in the HOPE Scale and the SIM for educators in the partner schools
  • assist educators and school personnel in the implementation of the intervention
  • assist with data collection and analysis
  • develop project yearly reports and other deliverables
  • identify, plan, and publish original scholarly communication related to the project goals in collaboration with the Project Director and her team

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in Education, Educational Psychology, Psychology, Gifted Education, or related area completed by the start of employment
  • Strong research and analytic skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience conducting research and disseminating results

Desired Qualifications
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a research team
  • Knowledge of gifted education and/or positive psychology
  • Experience developing and implementing educational interventions in schools or out-of-school programs
  • Experience designing and conducting mixed-methods research studies

Additional Information

Salary and benefits commensurate with qualifications and experience


Starting Date

The starting date is negotiable, but preferred start is no later than January 1, 2023
