Job Summary

The Public Safety Dispatcher is responsible for the general operation of the UCSF Communication Center, which consists of the following: process telephone calls for 911 police, fire medical and non-emergency services; input information into a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) System; input data into the various Law Enforcement Telecommunications Systems and interpret the printout information once it is obtained; operate a multi-channel radio system under emergency as well as non- emergency circumstances, adhering to FCC rules and regulations in the course of its operation and ability to audibly monitor radio traffic; operate a hand-held two-way radio for communications; maintain various logs; process various alarms; and perform other duties as assigned.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.


Department Description

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Police Department provides contemporary police services including criminal investigation, community policing, crime prevention and suppression, emergency management, and site security services to a daily population of over 50,000 people at University and contract locations. Founded in 1864, UCSF includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division for pre and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. UCSF is considered one of the nation’s premier health sciences teaching, training, and research centers. UCSF is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences.

The UCSF Police Department is known for its community service orientation, effectiveness at preventing crime through campus community involvement, and for providing a safe living and working environment for the promotion of education, research and public service. The Professional Standards Division is responsible for providing administrative, financial and personnel services for the department.


Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid California Driver’s License
  • Successful completion of California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course
  • Passing Score on POST Entry-level Dispatcher Selection Test Battery, prior to academy
  • Knowledge of Police Dispatching Procedures Including the Operation of state-of-the-art Telephone and Radio Systems within 1 year of appointment
  • Must be able to work shifts on rotational basis (days, swings and midnights); must be able to work on-call assignments and/or overtime as required
  • Effective written and verbal communications

Please Note: this position will require medical and psychological examinations and an extensive background investigation in compliance with California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) standards.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Information Technology, Personal Computers and related Software Applications Knowledge of Police Dispatching Procedures Including the Operation of state-of-the-art Telephone and Radio Systems
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Systems Knowledge of Information Technology, Personal Computers and related Software Applications

License/Certification

  • California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Public Safety Dispatcher Basic Course Certificate required within one year of appointment.
  • Valid California Driver’s License
