Academic Advisor for Business Programs

Job Description

The Academic Advisor for Business Programs is responsible for providing student-centric, proactive, professional and engaged academic advising to support student success. The Academic Advisor provides students with guidance on degree program options, academic and curricular requirements, USD and School of Business policies, and course planning to assist students with fulfilling graduation requirements.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic Advising

  • Provide academic advising for a caseload of School of Business students to support student goals via one-on-one appointments, drop-in appointments, group presentations, and email and phone correspondence.
  • Deliver accurate information about degree requirements, which includes core curriculum, SB major, minor and graduate curricula, course timing and prerequisites, and USD and School of Business policies.
  • Promote student understanding of the logic and purpose of USD and SB curriculum and policies.
  • Engage in proactive advising outreach based on advisee academic progress to improve student retention and persistence, including students receiving midterm deficiency grades and those placed on scholastic probation
  • Facilitate problem solving, decision-making, meaning-making, planning, and goal setting for advisees, coaching students through academic-related decisions and related impacts or implications (i.e. adding or dropping courses, selecting pass/fail grading option, adding/dropping majors/minors, study abroad timing, etc.).
  • Compose and send well-written and professional communications to advisees in adherence with the SB Center for Student Success communication calendar.
  • Assist continuing students with developing course plans to understand requirements, realistic graduation timing, and achieve educational and career goals, supporting retention and persistence to graduation.
  • Occasionally communicate with parents/families of continuing students to address academic progress questions or concerns when corresponding FERPA release is in writing.
  • Ensure advisees are informed of relevant academic and administration information in a timely manner.
  • Respond to student concerns and issues regarding course schedules, degree completion and/or registration procedures utilizing strong problem-solving skills.
  • Refer students to appropriate School of Business and USD resources and services (academic support, student involvement, health and wellness, counseling services, etc.).
  • Review Degree Audits for graduation candidates to check student progress and advise students on course selection to ensure timely graduation.
  • Coordinate with appropriate department chairs to facilitate review process for Transfer Articulation Requests from continuing advisees.
  • Review study abroad course selections with students in coordination with the International Center or Ahlers Center for International Business as appropriate.
  • Facilitate group advising sessions for prospective undeclared business majors and graduate students.
  • Acquire and maintain specialist knowledge of specific student populations (e.g., international students, international double degree students, student-athletes, veteran/military affiliated students, graduate students, pre-business students, etc.), as assigned.
  • Assist students with wellness concerns that are disclosed to them, or are shared with them by another student success center team member.
  • Assist students with problem identification, goal setting, and strategy development when they experience challenges negatively impacting academic, social, and personal areas including students who are academically disqualified or identified by faculty, administrators, staff, and advisors.

Student Onboarding

  • Support onboarding of incoming transfer students, which includes facilitating group advising sessions, one-on-one advising appointments, registration assistance, transfer of credit evaluation process, and connection with appropriate campus resources
  • Participate in institutional process to register incoming first-time first-year and graduate students for their first semester courses, aligning course selection with intended field of study
  • Act as a point of contact for incoming first-year and graduate students, addressing questions and concerns as they relate to course schedules, and referring students to appropriate departments or resources

Other

  • Develop and engage in on-going assessment to evaluate the student experience with advising and inform improvements to advising structure and practices
  • Coordinate with campus partners to support students as they navigate USD (especially the Office of the Registrar, Office of Financial Aid, Admissions, One Stop Student Center, International Center, Athletics, DLDRC, Honors Program, Military and Veterans Program, ITS, etc.)
  • Coordinate and collaborate with Student Professional Development Managers to ensure student success
  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 2 years of academic advising and/or student services experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • 3+ years in academic advising and/or student services within an institution of higher education
  • Experience managing student life-cycle

Performance Expectations: Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of student development, student retention, and student success theories and research
  • Knowledge of curriculum, degree programs, and other academic requirements and options
  • Knowledge of and adherence to legal guidelines of advising practice, such as privacy regulations and confidentiality, especially FERPA
  • Knowledge of the characteristics, needs, and experience of major and emerging student populations
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, Banner, Ellucian Degree Works, Salesforce, and other university database platforms
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, including interpersonal communication and public speaking skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Effective problem-solving and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to create rapport and build strong academic advising relationships with students
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group settings with a variety of audiences, such as students, families, colleagues, etc.
  • Ability to communicate in an inclusive and respectful manner
  • Ability to contribute to a culture of care
  • Ability to work as part of a team and collaborate with colleagues
  • Being flexible and versatile in coping with evolving work situations

Posting Salary:

$21.24 - $36.11 per hour; Excellent Benefits
