Responsibilities*

Acute Dialysis - Responsibilities

• Clinical Duties/Direct Patient Care
  • Welcome patients into the unit and check two patient identifiers with armband (full name and birthdate).
  • Conduct dialysis machine safety checks according to unit policy/procedure.
  • Obtain necessary pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weight.
  • Place patient on cardiac monitor, pulse oximeter, oxygen and suction as needed. Have basic knowledge of respiratory equipment.
  • Under the direction of a nurse, initiate, monitor and terminate hemodialysis.
  • Prepare dialysis machine according to prescription.
  • Assist with lab draws, labeling and sending to the lab.
  • Accurately document in the patients’ electronic medical record.
  • As directed by the RN, monitor patients throughout hemodialysis treatment, including patients’ response to dialysis, vascular access site and pressures, and visibility of patients’ face and access.
  • Obtain vital signs and perform all relevant functions necessary prior to terminating treatment.
  • Discontinue dialysis treatment according to unit approved policies/procedures.
  • Hold AVF/AVG needle sites post-treatment.
  • Evaluate patient post-treatment.
  • Obtain hemostasis and apply appropriate dressings for needles or catheter.
  • Evaluate patient prior to discharge.
  • Prime CRRT machines.
  • Draw labs at bedside.
  • Perform and document pre- and post-dialysis evaluation including weight and vital signs.
  • Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition to the RN.
  • Assist multidisciplinary team members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate, including disease process, access, online clearance monitoring, adequacy monitoring program and urea kinetic modeling.

• Technical Duties
  • Disinfect hemodialysis equipment including hemodialysis machines and portable reverse osmosis equipment.
  • Maintain environmental integrity by assuring all areas are safe and clean.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surface, equipment, back ledge and surrounding area between treatments according to unit policy.
  • Maintain patient care area daily by stocking supplies in the bedside carts and storage cabinets.
  • Perform all required pre-treatment dialysis machine alarm testing.
  • Ensure all blood spills are immediately cleaned with appropriate disinfectant according to unit policy.
  • Prepare, organize and efficiently utilize supplies and equipment to prevent waste.

 INU – Responsibilities

• Clinical Duties/Direct Patient Care
  • Knowledge of respiratory equipment used during procedures.
  • Scrubs in and assists the Medical Doctor or Physician Assistant with sterile procedures.
  • Maintain sterility during procedures.     
  • Provide recovery for patients after procedure is complete under supervision of the Registered Nurse
  • Suture removal
  • Hold pressure on sites after procedure is complete, under supervision of the Registered Nurse.
  • Apply dressings to procedure sites.        

• Technical Duties
  • Maintain patient care area, including procedure and preparation room daily by stocking supplies. 
  • Complete daily routine checks of the crash cart, glucometer, POC INR and contrast allergy box.  
  • Operate laboratory equipment to determine blood glucose and electrolytes.
  • Set up appropriate sterile field for procedure.
  • Count scrubs and exchange with laundry.
  • Obtain medication from pharmacy as directed by nursing staff.
  • Schedule patients in the electronic medical record.
  • Clean and prepare the preparation and procedure rooms for cases.
  • Clean the blood pressure, pulse and EKG monitoring cables and place in appropriate area every evening.

Required Qualifications*

• High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Certified hemodialysis technician, CCHT
• Minimum one-year experience working in a hemodialysis unit providing direct patient care
• Basic life support (BLS) certified
• Excellent communication skills

Desired Qualifications*

• Acute hemodialysis experience
• Experience with electronic medical documentation

Work Schedule

10 hour shifts. Monday – Saturday shift time is 1500 – 0130; Sundays shift time is 0800-1830.  

Additional Information

NOTE: Requires rotation of Saturdays and Sundays. Position may be filled anytime after the initial seven day posting.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
