The advanced operational analytics team in Clinical, Operations and Business analytics (COBA) is a growing DFCI team residing within the department of Informatics and Analytics (I&A). The team focuses on advanced analytics for operational decision making across clinical, operational and business stakeholders at the institute. The team also collaborates closely with other I&A teams to identify opportunities for AI/ML pilots and works with stakeholders to develop high value use cases for advanced analytics.

The Data Scientist will collect, curate, integrate, and analyze clinical and operational data to provide actionable information to other I&A teams, focusing on the collaboration with Patient Reported Data (PRD) team, as well as to the I&A clients including DFCI clinical departments and disease groups. The Data Scientist has access to an extraordinary range of healthcare and research data, including patient reported data, medical and pharmacy records, scheduling, referral, and results of laboratory and molecular tests. Using these data, the Data Scientist performs exploratory and advanced analysis in operational domains and provides reporting in such areas as quality measurement, clinical interventions, resource utilization, patient demographics, and outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide quantitative data analysis and reporting support to I&A clients in areas related to use of patient reported data
  • Collaborate and coordinate efforts with I&A PRD and Clinical Operations and Business Analytics (COBA) teams to ensure consistency of analytics process and proper data access and stewardship, as well as with other I&A groups, including Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) team, as appropriate for support and implementation of analytics across teams
  • Develops and/or uses statistical algorithms and modeling techniques to evaluate scenarios and predict future outcomes
  • Utilize business intelligence tools to create reports and dashboards that can be used for analytics and that can be operationalized as necessary
  • Consults with clinical, operational, and business leaders to understand problems and goals, and translate these needs into advanced analytics solutions
  • Quickly develops subject-matter expertise by fully understanding the complex methodologies used for measurement of healthcare outcomes
  • Serve as a technical expert for compiling, cleaning, manipulating, and analyzing data related to assigned projects
  • Working as part of the broader team to identify longer-term solutions that will improve quality, speed and efficacy of our current projects and programs

Translates the data artifacts into clinical and business insights, and delivers these insights through presentations prepared for audiences at various levels of leadership and technical expertise

  • Must be comfortable documenting project and data requirements, reporting, analytics, and visualization processes
  • Build and foster an institute-wide analytic community of practice by training, educating and bringing together analysts, data stewards, business stewards and analytics consumers
  • Deliver results for projects on-time and on-budget
  • Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed

Qualifications

Minimum Education:
Bachelor’s degree required in a STEM field.  Master’s degree preferred in bioinformatics, medical informatics, computational biology, statistics, computer science/engineering, or a related quantitative field.  A PhD with limited experience is also acceptable at this level.

 

Minimum Experience:
1 year of experience required; Master’s degree may substitute for experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Computational and data analysis: Experienced in data science methodologies and techniques, e.g. hypothesis testing, classification, regression, clustering, feature allocation, deep learning, time-series analysis, network modeling, feature selection/engineering.
  • Natural language processing experience preferred
  • Jupyter Lab, Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure experience preferred
  • Data management and/or software engineering
  • Collaboration and communication: Able to set appropriate expectations, discuss and present results to customers in formal settings, and share ideas accurately and communicate them effectively, both in writing and verbally.
  • Contributes to the development and growth of others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively interact with all levels of staff and external contacts.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize, and manage people if needed, within an environment with changing priorities.
