Senior Technical Advisor, Operational Space Combat (Colorado Springs, CO)

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you passionate about shaping the U.S. approach to space as a combat domain?

If so, we're looking for someone like you to join our team at the APL Colorado Springs Field Office.

We are seeking a Senior Technical Advisor to help the National Space Defense Center (NSDC) translate warfighter needs to define operational space combat. The technical advisor must be a leader with vision for future U.S. space superiority. You will regularly brief and work alongside flag officers and C-Suite executives as you translate threat capabilities and operational needs into the systems of the future. Our team is laser-focused on providing value to the end-user, which is the guardian, soldier, sailor, or Marine using the system.

As a Senior Technical Advisor...

  • Your primary responsibility will be translating user needs into the requirements that will inform major acquisition decisions and tactics evolution for the space enterprise while embedded at the NSDC.
  • You will help define operational C2 in support of space superiority.
  • You will be the primary representative for APL with senior military and government leadership within the NSDC.
  • You will connect a diverse set of APL projects and capabilities to rapidly respond to operational needs.

Over the past 25 years, the Space Exploration Sector at APL, has pushed the boundaries of what is possible; delivering game-changing impacts to sponsors like NASA and the Department of Defense. This includes historic, science space firsts like New Horizons reaching Pluto, Parker Solar Probe being the first to “touch” the sun, and the DART mission that redirected an asteroid for planetary defense. As a not-for-profit university affiliated research center, APL also delivered solutions to our nation’s national security challenges, as proven with the recent Deep Space Advanced Radar Concept (DARC) Tech Demo, and acts as a trusted partner with the US Space Force in space domain awareness and space-integrated warfare.

APL teams are currently developing missions that will advance the search for life in the Solar System through programs such as Europa Clipper and Dragonfly, exploring the lunar and cislunar domains, and providing fundamental knowledge of our Sun’s influence on the near-Earth environment through IMAP and other research and technology endeavors.  To learn about these APL’s mission and projects, https://civspace.jhuapl.edu/ and https://www.jhuapl.edu/OurWork/NationalSecuritySpace.

  • Are skilled in defining and interpreting the studies needed to support critical decisions.
  • Are willing and able to relocate to Colorado Springs, CO to embed within NSDC.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
