Postdoctoral Appointee - AI/ML- driven control system for synchrotron beamlines

Argonne

Job Description

The Advanced Photon Source upgrade with the Multi-Bend Achromat (MBA) lattice will increase the coherence and brightness of the emitted radiation by two orders of magnitude. This will equip researchers for groundbreaking discoveries and transformational innovations that create new products and industries and generate jobs. To take full advantage of the APS upgrade, a significant effort is being invested in the research and development of coherence and wavefront-preserving optics, including windows, crystal optics, and mirrors. Under the guidance of a supervisor, the Postdoctoral Appointee will further develop automatic control systems based on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) and advanced wavefront sensing to drive the optical devices toward optimal performance in terms of beam coherence and wavefront shape. The Postdoctoral Appointee will explore different AI/ML techniques and algorithms and test them on real optical systems with synchrotron x-rays. The system will then be used to commission the new feature beamlines post-APS upgrade.

Position Requirements

Necessary skills include:

  • Strong background in AI/ML model development and black-box/derivative-free optimization problems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Python 3 programming language.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Skills in understanding abstract concepts and synthesizing results.
  • Good oral and written skills.

Preferred experience in:

  • Experience in Object Oriented computer programming
  • Knowledge of X-ray physics, the concept of beam coherence, and X-ray optics.
  • Knowledge of X-ray coherence-based experimental techniques.
  • Knowledge of Interferometric methods, including grating interferometry and/or other techniques.
  • Experience in conducting experiments at X-ray synchrotron radiation beamlines.

Education Requirement: Must have received a PhD within the last three years to qualify
