Job Summary

The Brain Tumor Center at UCSF focuses on developing new treatments for patients by studying the mechanisms through which brain tumors develop and grow. Research in the Young laboratory makes use of molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry, mouse models of glioblastoma, genomics, bioinformatics, pharmacology, and multidisciplinary collaborations to gain new insights into the molecular determinants of human malignancies. Our team is comprised of cancer biologists, surgeons, computational scientists, and physician-scientists working together to advance understanding of cancer biology and improve patient outcomes. Scientific insights stemming from our work have directly inspired clinical trials and changed treatment options for patients at UCSF and beyond.

Highly motivated individuals with prior laboratory experience are being recruited. Laboratory technician responsibilities will include cell culture, CRISPR gene editing, molecular biology, biochemistry, genomic sequencing, immunofluorescence/immunohistochemistry, spatial proteomics/transcriptomics, and mouse models of glioblastoma. Prior familiarity with these techniques is a plus, and a willingness to learn new techniques is expected. Current laboratory members include graduate, medical, and medical scientist training program students at UCSF as well as research residents and postdoctoral fellows. This position will focus specifically on understanding how the immunosuppressive microenvironment found in brain tumors is influenced by the cancer stem cell population in glioblastoma and immunotherapeutic strategies to target this tumor microenvironment under the supervision of Dr. Jacob Young. In addition, the successful applicant will receive direct mentorship from Dr. Young to ensure specific laboratory responsibilities are directed toward big picture career objectives – which can included clinical exposure to the operating room.
