Organizational Overview

The BNL Astrophysics and Cosmology Group has an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Associate beginning on or about September 1st, 2023. BNL has contributed to the development of the Vera Rubin Observatory for over a decade as they designed and built rafts for the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST) camera.  We are involved in Rubin Observatory commissioning and operations and hold critical roles within the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration.


Position Description

We are looking for a postdoctoral research associate to join our group in preparation for the LSST from the Rubin Observatory. A strong candidate will have interest in weak gravitational lensing and galaxy clustering. They will work closely with existing group members on developing analysis methodology, commissioning of the science pipelines and working with precursor datasets and early LSST data. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Development of methods and associated scalable software for analysis of LSST data
  • Studying systematics in LSST data during commissioning, survey validation, and science operations
  • Execution of data reduction software in production and analysis of code inefficiencies

Position Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • PhD in Cosmology or Astrophysics or a related field
  • Understanding of cosmological weak lensing and galaxy clustering
  • Fluency in python for data analysis
  • Ability to solve problems independently
  • Research experience demonstrated through a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proven ability for disseminating research results by writing manuscripts and giving academic presentations

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience in running codes in production on cluster environments
  • Experience in astronomical image analysis

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Ability to travel internationally and within the US

Other Information:

  • BNL policy requires that after obtaining a PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing event
