Position Summary
The School of Nuclear Science and Engineering invites applications for a full-time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track (annual) Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Full Professor position.
These positions will strengthen and support the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE)’s mission to provide world-class education so students can become industry, academic, and policy leaders driving the future of nuclear science worldwide. NSE has approximately 300 students with curriculum encompassing the broad areas of nuclear and radiation sciences, engineering, and technology. The School’s tenure/tenure-track faculty members have areas of specialization that include nuclear reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, computational methods, radiation detection and measurement, nuclear security and nonproliferation, nuclear materials, health physics, and radiochemistry.
Successful applicants are expected to perform a combination of duties related to teaching and advising in nuclear engineering and/or radiation health physics, advancing research and other scholarly activities in the areas of nuclear science and engineering, and performing service activities. Duties will support the vision, mission and goals of the School, College, and University.

The Complex will harness one of the nation’s most powerful supercomputers to solve challenging computational problems and leverage other specialized research facilities purposely designed to facilitate team-based research and to advance complex computational problems.

Position Duties
50% – Teaching and Related Duties:
  • Delivers four courses each year in support of the undergraduate and graduate nuclear engineering and/or radiation health physics degree programs.
  • Participates with faculty and administrative staff in curriculum development, including course design and delivery strategies.
  • Advises undergraduate and graduate students and participates in School- and College-level extended education efforts.
  • Conducts an assessment of student learning for each assigned course, each term, and prepares proper documentation in support of the ABET accreditation process.

40% – Research and Scholarly Activities:
  • Develops a sustainable, externally funded and nationally recognized research program.
  • Produces and disseminates impactful scholarly work in the form of publications in peer-reviewed journals, presentations at regional and national professional meetings, and in other forms as appropriate.
  • Supervises and mentors graduate students, and provides leadership in the development and progression of graduate student projects and thesis research.
  • Participates with School and College faculty and administrative staff on broader OSU and multi-institutional research initiatives.

10% – Service:
  • Serves on School, College, and University committees.
  • Cooperates with School faculty in support of developing and continuing efforts related to improvement of instruction and research programs in nuclear engineering and radiation health physics.
  • Participates in regional and national professional service activities.

Minimum/Required Qualifications
  • PhD in nuclear engineering, health physics, or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a communicator (e.g., written, oral, and visual/graphical communication).
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with other disciplines within internal and external units.
  • Demonstrated potential for establishing a productive, externally funded research program in a nuclear-related field.
  • Demonstrated potential to effectively teach introductory and advanced courses in the nuclear engineering and/or radiation health physics undergraduate and graduate curricula and to develop new courses that serve these programs.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion.

  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq.   • Postdoctoral experience (at a university, national laboratory, or in industry) in nuclear science and engineering or closely related field that has expanded upon skills developed during doctoral studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop a research program that complements and expands on existing activities at OSU.

For a position affiliated with the Collaborative Innovation Complex (CIC) (in addition to the qualifications listed above):
  • Research experience involving multi-scale, multiphysics modeling and simulation, data analysis and/or methods development requiring high performance computing.
