Position Summary
The department of Crop and Soil Sciences (CSS) invites applications for a full time (1.00 FTE), 9-month, tenure-track Soil Science Assistant Professor position with expertise in pedology, soil genesis and morphology, soil landscape analysis or related areas. Candidates that bridge these areas with other soil science disciplines that are complementary to the existing strengths of the department are also encouraged to apply.

The incumbent is expected to develop a vigorous and innovative externally-funded research program that is internationally recognized and advances knowledge of and/or solutions to important problems in Soil Science. The incumbent in this position should be able to develop active collaborations within and outside the university, to advise graduate and undergraduate students, to engage with stakeholders interested in Oregon soils, and to be involved in service to the department, university, and the broader scientific community. The incumbent will teach a course in Soil Morphology and Classification, and one additional course each year. This position requires a demonstrable commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The Department of Crop and Soil Science has 114 on-campus faculty and staff, and an additional 33 off-campus faculty located at branch experiment stations and county extension offices with academic homes in CSS. These faculty and staff are engaged in the department’s four missions in research, teaching, extension, and service. There are more than 100 students seeking CSS degrees ranging from the BS to PhD. As a faculty member at a land grant university, the incumbent is expected to excel in research and teaching, and to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in these areas. This position contributes to the missions of the Department of Crop and Soil Science, the College of Agricultural Sciences, and the Agricultural Experiment Station at Oregon State University. The position will be located at the main Corvallis campus.

Position Duties
70% Research
  • Pursue scholarly research that includes (but are not limited to) the topical areas of dynamic soil properties; soil-landscape relationships and soil geomorphology; soil degradation; hydropedology; soil landscape processes; sustainable soil management; wetland soils; soil survey, soil databases, soil information systems, and geospatial information; forest soils; climate and land-use change; rangeland soils; mineralogy; remote sensing of soils; soil conservation; soil erosion; subaqueous soils; cultural soil resources; pedotransfer functions; or soil modeling.
  • Establish and maintain an externally funded program of research/scholarly work characterized by distinction as evidenced by national and international recognition and significant contributions to the field.
  • Publish scholarly work in peer-reviewed, top-ranked journals, conference proceedings, and books appropriate for the area of interest.
  • Disseminate research results by participation at national and international professional conferences and symposia.
  • Supervise research staff (i.e., faculty research assistant or research associate), postdoctoral scholar or Fellow, graduate research assistants, and/or student employees, as needed.
  • Share findings with and cooperate with other research scientists and stakeholders in Oregon and at local, regional, national, and international conferences.
  • Serve as an investigator on a USDA-NIFA Hatch collaborative or Hatch multistate project.

20% Teaching
  • Teach and develop high quality undergraduate and graduate courses. Teaching duties will include 2 courses each year, including Soil Morphology and Classification (SOIL 466/566), and a second course to be decided based on departmental needs and the incumbent’s expertise.
  • Teaching activities include classroom instruction, direction of projects, student research, and internships, serving on undergraduate and/or graduate committees, course and curriculum development, and interacting with students in more informal settings.
  • Mentor and advise students on their development, including the choices they face relating to academic program, research, and career direction.
  • Supervise graduate teaching assistants, as needed.

10% Service
  • Participate actively as a member of the department, college and university community on departmental committees, search committees, in university governance activities, and student advising.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion, including efforts promoting equitable outcomes among learners of diverse and underrepresented identity groups.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Soil Science or a closely related field. Candidates must have successfully defended and obtained their Ph.D. prior to appointment.
Experience in pedology, soil genesis, soil classification, soil morphology and/or soil-landscape relationships.
Teaching or teaching assistant experience in a professional setting.
Demonstrated ability to work as a team member with other professionals and diverse audiences, and/or experience collaborating with partners outside academia.
A publication record of research articles addressing soil science in peer-reviewed journals.
Demonstrated excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills.
Evidence of ability to promote and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications
Postdoctoral experience, or equivalent professional experience.
Experience in developing courses or has had training in pedagogy.
Experience as a supervisor or co-supervisor or mentor in a research environment.
Grant writing experience as PI or major collaborator to obtain external funding support for research.
Life experience, education, and/or training that broadens capacity to promote student success or impact underserved audiences.
Demonstrated expertise in pedology, soil genesis, soil classification, soil morphology and/or soil-landscape relationships.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The incumbent will be expected to travel occasionally for conducting field research, sharing findings through on-site presentations, and participation in other collaborative efforts. Incumbent will conduct or direct others in outdoor pedological field work using hand-held or powered equipment under varying and sometimes inclement weather conditions.
