Job Summary

This position requires a motivated, organized person who can communicate and coordinate well with other staff who support projects within the microbiome research community, that are collaborative efforts that span multiple research disciplines and partners. The candidate will provide technical support to QMAC projects, receiving, cataloging and processing a variety of sample types from investigators. The position is responsible for sample processing, data generation, and general facility management and will contribute to analyses and manuscript and report generation.
The successful applicant will work closely with the QMAC Director and project investigators to facilitate timely project progress and will have opportunities to develop and lead their own projects.


Department Description

Research in gastrointestinal and liver diseases is active in the UCSF Division of Gastroenterology (GI). The division has a longstanding reputation for excellence in hepatology research and has a growing investigative program in luminal gastroenterology. Faculty in the Division of Gastroenterology contribute to discovery in several areas, ranging from the identification of basic mechanisms of GI disease, to the improvement of outcomes following liver transplantation, to the optimization of GI care in resource-poor settings. The division also provides comprehensive training in GI research through its postdoctoral programs.


Required Qualifications

  • BA/BS with a degree in a related science and 1 or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position and demonstrating technical expertise in these areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of scientific methodology and related research literature sufficient to contribute original ideas; or journey level knowledge of scientific procedures in two or more distinct fields of science.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required.
  • Experience in large-scale sample handling and processing.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, interpret, evaluate, and present research findings in a variety of formats including research manuscripts, grant proposals, external manuscripts, and oral presentations and in collaborative and instructional scientific interactions within laboratory and discussion settings.
  • Ability to utilize on-line databases and other software to create, retrieve, and compile data using standard software programs.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills to establish and maintain excellent working relationships with colleagues, faculty, donors, and industry partners, with an emphasis on collaboration, tact, diplomacy, flexibility, professionalism, and discretion.
  • Solid communications skills with the ability to speak and write clearly about technical and scientific research and develop narrative for correspondence, brochures, and other public relations material.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with human microbiome molecular techniques (high-throughput sample processing, biomarker sequencing etc.)
