Job Summary

This is a 45% limited appointment starting from the date of hire, not to exceed 1000 hours.

Under the supervision of a Clinical Research Supervisor or Principal Investigator (PI), the Research Assistant will perform entry-level duties related to the support and coordination of clinical studies, and may receive training and development to prepare and advance for journey-level work at the next level within the series.

We seek to hire a highly motivated part-time Research Assistant to work closely with Dr. Nhung Nguyen at the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education. The successful applicant will be involved in projects focused on vaping cessation interventions for young adults. Responsibilities may include but not be limited to programming study surveys in online platforms; helping recruit, enroll, register, schedule and retain study subjects; participating in or leading interviews with young adults; training participants on using the study app; entering and cleaning data into study databases, maintaining data quality; assisting with data analysis and preparation of reports and tables; attending team meetings; and performing other duties as assigned.  The position is ideally suited for recent university graduates seeking to gain research experience after having completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree. In the position, the researcher assistant will receive training in human subject research and the conduct and analysis of the study data, a typical qualitative research method. Previous experience with tobacco treatment is not a prerequisite, but the research assistant is expected to have strong passion for tobacco cessation interventions for young people. 

May be responsible for the coordination of one or more single or multi-site, active or follow-up clinical trials; help prepare protocols for study initiation; help design flow sheets, data forms and source documents; gather and interpret medical, surgical and laboratory data regarding clinical trial subjects; may apply understanding of inclusion/exclusion eligibility criteria for protocols; help recruit, enroll, register, schedule and retain study subjects; record protocol specific treatments and assure collection and shipment of samples; assist research personnel to keep patients on study schedules; complete study forms to submit to sponsors and/or appropriate agencies; collect, enter and clean data into study databases, maintaining data quality; assist with data analysis; assist with preparation of reports and tables; attend team meetings.


Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) here at UCSF, with more than 600 full-time faculty. The mission of the Department includes research, teaching, patient care, and public service. The Department has a decentralized organizational structure across four locations (Mission Bay, Parnassus Heights, San Francisco Veterans Affairs Health Care System, and the Zuckerberg San Francisco General) and approximately 38 divisions. UCSF DOM has consistently ranked among the top four departments of medicine in the country. Authority and accountability of the Department rests with the Department Chair (leads Parnassus Heights site) and also directs the Vice Chairs/Chiefs at the SFVAHCS and ZSFG.

The Division of General Internal Medicine (DGIM) is one of the divisions within DOM and SOM. DGIM, one of the larger Divisions in DOM, is home to a spectacular group of faculty, learners, and staff committed to outstanding patient care, research, and education. DGIM is a national leader in clinical care, education, and research, and our mission is to provide high quality and accessible clinical care, train the future leaders of primary care, and to conduct cutting-edge research in wide-variety of disciplines, including the aspects of health outcomes related to socioeconomic and ethnic factors. DGIM has more than 75 faculty, almost 45 MSPs/VCPs/post-doctoral trainees, over 70 learners, and 150+ staff (both Campus and Health) and we serve more than 25,000 diverse patients, with expenditures over $33M.

The Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education serves as a focal point for a broad range of research, education, and public service activities for over 70 faculty in 15 departments and all four schools at UCSF. It is part of the UCSF Cardiovascular Research Institute and the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Cancer Control Program. Required Qualifications

  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications and presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; and excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively in a diverse team.
  • Attention to details;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Windows.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team-based environment; project management and coordination skills; ability to prioritize tasks and meet multiple deadlines on concurrent projects.
  • High integrity and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with patients, co-workers, & physicians.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated proficiency with medical terminology.
  • Experience working with patients or study subjects, particularly young adults and diverse communities.
  • Experience with interview and/or qualitative research.
  • Familiarity with smartphone use and app functions.
  • Ability to abstract data from medical records and transfer it to data collection forms or directly into databases.
