Job Description

The University at Albany, State University of New York, seeks a full professor at the intersection of cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. The new hire will be a member of the UAlbany AI Institute. The successful candidate will provide evidence of expertise in AI and address how AI is integral to their research program. The candidate will be hired into the Cybersecurity Department in the College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity (CEHC). Candidates' research focus within both AI and cybersecurity is open, so long it involves both topics.

The successful candidate will demonstrate a significant track record of research and teaching in cybersecurity. They should demonstrate that they have taken an integrative approach in working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds within and outside their department and college. Candidates should have a strong, established research record, showing their commitment to pursuing challenging problems in cybersecurity and AI. Research that impacts the real world in various contexts, such as business, healthcare, energy & sustainability, critical infrastructure, and government is preferred. CEHC has a goal of creating a dedicated team of researchers and educators capable of enabling our students to successfully explore and interpret the rich array of disciplines and perspectives contained within cybersecurity and allied disciplines.

CEHC and the Cybersecurity Department offer student learning opportunities in cybersecurity at all levels. At the undergraduate level, we offer a Cybersecurity B.S. degree, a minor in cybersecurity, and one in Machine Learning Informatics. At the graduate level, we offer an MSIS degree with a concentration in data analytics, and an MS in collaboration with the School of Business in Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity.

The College also houses an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Information Science, including specializations in Data Analytics and Information Assurance. CEHC faculty, along with affiliated faculty from the School of Business, Rockefeller College, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and College of Arts and Sciences, support a program of about 40 doctoral students. In addition to their core courses, students select a primary and secondary specialization to demonstrate a breadth of understanding of the information fields.

Job Requirements:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Cybersecurity or a related field, from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Applicants must address in their application their ability to work with a culturally diverse population.
  • Applicants must address in their application the integration of artificial intelligence into their research program.
  • A record of research requisite for an appointment as a Full Professor in the field of Cybersecurity.
  • Applicants for must have experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in cybersecurity.
  • Applicants must have demonstrated experience in applying for and obtaining external funding.
  • The department is open to researchers in a wide range of areas related to cybersecurity. Inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches are welcome, especially those that can employ a wide range of methods. We are particularly interested in researchers who can contribute to the Cybersecurity departments and CEHC's educational programs at all levels.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty and to mentor students from a wide range of disciplines, cultures, and academic backgrounds is essential.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with the principles and operation of a variety of sub-areas of cybersecurity, and related disciplines in which cybersecurity is important as providing needed protections, collaboration, data sources, areas of critical economic or societal importance, providing underlying ethical underpinnings, etc.
  • The ability to teach and develop classes in existing and emerging subfields of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and related fields.
  • Prior experience in research and collaboration at the intersection of cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, informatics, and other disciplines.
