Travel and Infectious Disease Faculty (Assistant or Associate Professor of Medicine)

Job Description

Unleash Your Potential With Us

As a next-generation public research institution, we are an inclusive community of thinkers, doers, creators, innovators, healers, and leaders striving to shape the future and solve the world’s most challenging problems. No matter what your role is, when you join Knight Nation, you become an integral part of our mission to become a university for the future. You’ll be met with opportunities to connect and collaborate with uniquely talented faculty, staff, and students across 13 colleges and multiple campuses and regional locations. That means greater challenges to tackle, more meaningful opportunities to grow, and rewarding experiences that go beyond a paycheck.

The Opportunity

Travel and tourism is the largest industry and economic lifeblood of Central Florida; the area hosts more than 72 million visitors each year. Given the scope and continued growth of the travel industry, Orlando has the opportunity to become the global capital for travel and tourism research, with the University of Central Florida assuming a leadership role in this development. However, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the vulnerability of our travel and tourism industry to health and safety threats.

The UCF Strategic Investment Program has recently invested $4.5 million dollars into the Infectious Disease and Travel Health Initiative (IDTVI). These funds will be used to hire 9 new faculty across four departments at UCF (e.g., Hospitality; Biomedical Sciences; Engineering; Population Health) with diverse disciplinary and methodological approaches to research in Travel and Infectious Disease. We expect these new faculty, in addition to existing faculty, will provide a critical mass of investigators whose research collaborations will benefit from cross-pollination of different areas of expertise, resulting in innovative team science well-positioned to obtain external funding.

As part of the Infectious Disease and Travel Health Initiative, the University of Central Florida (UCF), College of Medicine is seeking applicants for two (2) tenure-earning assistant professors of medicine or tenured associate professors of medicine within our Department of Population Health Sciences. Positions will be tenure-track or tenured based on experience and qualifications.

We seek faculty candidates who will contribute their methodological skills and research interests to collaborations in the Infectious Disease and Travel Health Initiative. While we welcome candidates who focus on other existing pathogens transmissible through travel/tourism (e.g., COVID-19, measles, monkeypox), candidates must also have interest in new and emerging pathogens that may impact travel/tourism in the future. We welcome candidates from many different potential academic disciplines and methodological approaches to understand the transmission of infectious diseases through travel and tourism. The area of research within infectious disease and travel health is also open, but may include:

  • Epidemiology and surveillance of travel-related illnesses.

  • Disease transmission through social networks (e.g., airplanes, workplaces, travel) or mass gatherings using contact tracing or social network analysis.

  • Testing and vaccination, including research on vaccine resistance or interventions to expand testing and vaccination (including to the travel workforce).

  • Prevention strategies to reduce transmission of infection by travelers or travel workforce.

  • Evaluation of travel policies and restrictions on disease transmission.

  • Climate change and global warming on changing epidemiological patterns of tropical disease into Florida.

  • Migration and immigration-related infection and illness.

  • Design and analysis of modeling, including agent-based models, that explore the impact of various interventions and support the design and interpretation of forecasting models that estimate epidemiologic trends.

  • Creating various epidemiologic models (both static and transmission dynamic).

The Department of Population Health Sciences is developing a robust interdisciplinary population health research team that uses theory and methods from multiple disciplines to broaden our understanding of the pathways that produce health and health disparities at the population level. The department currently consists of seven faculty with training in epidemiology, biostatistics, health behavior, implementation science, and social sciences.

In a collaborative effort with faculty throughout the university, the department is currently in the process of developing a two-year Master’s in Public Health (MPH) degree program in Population Health Sciences. Within this program, students will have the opportunity to select one of five specialty areas: 1) Digital Health, 2) Cancer and Chronic Disease, 3) Infectious Diseases, 4) Community and Global Health, or 5) Health Equity.  Applicants whose research fits broadly into one of these five MPH specialty areas are especially welcome.

Additional information about the Department of Population Health Sciences and its current faculty can be found at: https://med.ucf.edu/academics/academic-departments/population-health/population-health-sciences-faculty/ .

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D., M.D., DrPH, Ed.D., J.D., or equivalent terminal degree from an accredited institution, qualify for the tenure track at the UCF COM, and demonstrate independent scholarly productivity in population health-related research. The candidate will have a track-record of involvement in externally-funded research. They will have demonstrated innovative contributions to science reflected by publication in high-impact journals.

The candidate’s scholarly background and experience must be commensurate with the faculty rank for which the application is submitted. To be eligible for appointment as a tenured associate professor of medicine upon hire, the successful candidate must have a distinguished record of scholarly achievement and teaching experience commensurate with a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor of medicine.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Possess methodological skills and expertise that expand the existing faculty’s methodological base.

  • A track record of addressing social and structural determinants of health and/or health disparities among underserved populations such as those who are economically marginalized, minoritized populations, women, recent immigrants, homeless or housing insecure, and incarcerated populations (many of whom work in the travel industry).

  • Demonstrated teaching excellence in offering courses in either travel health-related topics or in the applicant’s methodological specialty as part of an MPH curriculum.

  • A record of funding from extramural sources (NIH, RWJF, CDC, DOJ or equivalent) as principal investigator (or the potential for funding if at the assistant professor level).

  • The capacity to foster multi-institutional collaborations.

  • Research that can lead to collaborations with other faculty in the Infectious Disease and Travel Health Initiative, existing population health faculty at UCF COM, as well as faculty in other disciplines at UCF.

  • A Master of Public Health degree.

Additional Application Materials Required

UCF requires all applications and supporting documents be submitted electronically through the Human Resources employment opportunities website, https://www.ucf.edu/jobs/ .  In addition to the online application, interested candidates should upload: a cover letter; a current curriculum vitae; a teaching statement detailing interests, qualifications, and experience; a brief statement outlining research interests, research plan, and plans for extramural funding;  a brief diversity statement about ability to teach, mentor, and conduct research with underrepresented students and populations; and a list with contact information for three (3) professional references.

NOTE: Please have all five documents ready when applying so they can be attached at that time. Once the online submission process is finalized, the system does not allow applicants to submit additional documents later. Incomplete applications with missing documents cannot be considered

The selected candidate will be required to submit official transcripts (and, as applicable, U.S. degree equivalency evaluations) documenting the conferral of their qualifying academic credentials.
