Dr. Anja Karlstaedt's laboratory is looking for a highly motivated Research Associate I interested in the metabolic crosstalk between cardiac and cancer cells to join the Department of Cardiology within the Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center! Cedars-Sinai is a multidisciplinary, highly collaborative research center with an emphasis on disease and translational research.

Dr. Karlstaedt’s research focuses on the cellular mechanisms that cause heart failure in cancer patients using interdisciplinary and computational approaches. Our work has uncovered several regulatory mechanisms that explain how oncometabolic stress induces metabolic and proteomic remodeling in the heart and skeletal muscle. The challenge is now to develop strategies that target the tumor while protecting the heart.

We are looking for a highly motivated and creative scientist with a basic scientific background who is willing to learn new techniques, collaborate with postdoctoral scientists, and passionate about the challenges of examining the interactions between metabolism, cancer, and immunity. 

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Performs a variety of routine laboratory tasks and procedures.
- Keeps accurate and detailed project records of experiments and results.
- May assist with animal husbandry.
- Maintains lab equipment and related records.
- Transports, processes and logs samples.
- Maintains computer database with relevant clinical information.
- Performs lab maintenance duties, including glassware cleaning and sterilization.
- Maintains stocks of general lab materials, and places orders for lab equipment and supplies.
- Assists new students and fellows at the laboratory.
- Independently conduct experiments planned together with the PI and post-doctoral scientist
- Assists in the operation of niche equipment and machinery.
- Observes and aligns with safety standards and procedures.
- Maintain accurate, complete, up-to-date notes about lab work and results
- Willingness to learn new techniques and an ability to follow protocol instructions
- Analyze basic data sets and generate figures
- Participate in regular lab meetings

Educational Requirements:

- Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts Degree in biological sciences.

Experience:

Preferred Experience:
- Some experience with basic molecular biology techniques is an advantage (e.g., ELISA, Western Blots, protein assays, cloning, RNA and DNA isolation)
- Prior basic experience with cell culture is desirable.
- Coordination of tasks and activities to maximize the effectiveness of time management
- Working knowledge of database management, personal computers, and presentation and imaging software.   - Understanding of general research objectives.
- Familiar with routine laboratory procedures and experimental protocols.
- Must possess computer skills to include, but not limited to, Excel and Word. Additional programming experiences in R, python or perl is an advantage

Physical Demands:

- Able to perform moderate lifting.
- Able to sit, stand and walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Able to read papers and online documents.
- Able to operate standard office equipment.
- Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job functions.
