About the Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities

The Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities (referred to as the Center) is a new think + do tank in the College of Architecture, Art, and Planning (AAP) at Cornell University. The Center is comprised of 15 faculty led research labs (this number is expected to grow); two, multi-year strategic initiatives focused on urban climate change and inequality with external partners; and faculty seed research grants and creative grants. The Center also anticipates supporting 2 (and possibly up to 4 postdoctoral fellows) each year linked to its strategic initiatives. The work of the Center is both domestic and international. The Opportunity

The Cornell Mui Ho Center for Cities is seeking a service-oriented professional to join our team and work closely with the Director and Program and Research Coordinator to help build the Center. This is an exciting opportunity to join a team and help shape a new research center that has a strong commitment to meaningful change on the ground. In this role you will:

  • Help implement the Center’s communication strategy, including archiving assets and curating content on the college’s various communications platforms (i.e., website, social media).
  • Contribute substantive to core research of the Center and Center faculty; for example, background research, literature reviews, and fact finding and checking. Contribute to the writing and editing reports, working papers, and blogs.
  • In close collaboration with OSP and the PRO team, support to faculty applying for externally sponsored research with pre-proposal and post-proposal support.
  • Create as well as track timelines, milestones, KPIs, and systems of financial reporting for Center initiatives and more ambitious Center supported faculty-led projects and externally funded research projects.
  • In collaborations with AAP communications, manage the Center’s communications, including content design and maintenance of the Center’s website, creation and distribution of digital communications, printed material, social media, and slide presentations.
  • Support inward and outward facing programing, such as symposium, high profile courses, trainings, lecture series, workshops, media launches, and retreats.
  • Create, update, maintain archives and databases of documents, stakeholder contact lists, and communications assets.
  • Support the Center Director and Program and Research Coordinator, including calendar management, scheduling complex meetings, preparing agendas and materials, and maintaining records.
  • Support Center faculty and affiliates with domestic and international travel arrangements; including preparation of complex itineraries and process travel and other Center related reimbursements.

This is a part-time (20 hours/week) endowed position that is benefits eligible. The ideal candidate will work half days on campus five days per week. 

What We Need

We are looking for a team member that is flexible and willing to roll up their sleeves and work on a range of tasks as needed. Additionally, you will:

  • Hold an Associates degree and at least 3 years of relevant professional administrative experience.
  • Have excellent time management.
  • Demonstrate the aptitude to prioritize and move between multiple and diverse tasks as needs change.
  • Be comfortable working in dynamic environment.
  • Be willing to provide support to diverse sets of stakeholders, initiatives, and projects, including scheduling, monitoring, budget tracking. High level of oral, written, and visual communication skills.
  • Work collaboratively as well as independently, exercise excellent professional judgment, work carefully, and paying attention to detail.
  • Have a high degree of professionalism, diplomacy, and discretion when engaging with stakeholders, policy makers, advisors, and potential funders.
  • Fluently use the suite of Microsoft software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and using google docs and google sheets and willingness to learn new software as needed by the Center.

If you possess these experiences this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications that we would view as incredibly helpful in this role, to include:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a field closely related to the core work of the Center and professional experience in a research center, think tank, non-profit, or in a higher education environment and an educational environment. Examples of relevant educational and professional areas, include but are not limited to: urban planning or policy, architecture, urban design, urban studies, international development, international relations, geography, and urban sustainability.
  • The preferred candidate would have some of the following skills: graphic design skills, data analysis, proficiency in data visualization.
  • Preferred knowledge of and/or willingness to learn Zotero, Drupal, Mailchimp, InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Qualtrics, GIS, SPSS, and other software as needed to support the work of the Center.
