Senior Level:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • Two (2) years professional level research experience

Principal Level:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year for year basis
  • Three (3) years professional level research experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics or related field
  • Three (3) to Four (4) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory

Nature of Work

The newly established Laboratory of Translational Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Neuroscience, at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus is hiring for laboratory lead and research technician positions. Come be part of our team and developing the next breakthroughs and discoveries in translational neuroscience.

Our lab is directed by Drs. Tracy L. Bale and Scott M. Thompson, who bring decades of experience in dissecting the molecular underpinnings of neurodevelopmental disorders and psychiatric disease to identify novel biomarkers and pharmacotherapies for targeted interventions that improve mental health.

We are seeking research specialists with a variety of laboratory experience, including multiple openings for a senior level research specialist and a Principal level research specialist to serve as our laboratory lead professional and manage lab operations. These individuals will serve as the backbone of our research operation, supporting the day-to-day maintenance of laboratory equipment, supplies, and reagents, managing transgenic mouse colonies, writing regulatory protocols, and providing technical expertise and assistance to research projects. This is a great opportunity for recent graduates looking to expand their laboratory experience and for career research professionals looking to advance their skills and scientific contributions and leadership skills. 

Research services professionals at all levels will participate in research projects that use mouse models and cutting-edge techniques to probe the biological mechanisms underlying neuropsychiatric disorders and driving the transmission of intergenerational stress. Positions will include providing assistance to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in experiments and data collection, sample processing, assays and procedures, and analysis of results using mouse models and human samples.

Techniques used in the lab include next generation sequencing, radioimmune assays, cell culture, seahorse, extracellular vesicle isolation, Western blot, qPCR/PCR, electrophysiology, immunohistology and microscopy, transcranial perfusions, intercranial injections, stereotaxic surgery, chemogenetic/DREADDs, optogenetics and fiber photometry, chronic stress protocols, and animal (mouse) behavior assessments.

All prospective applicants must be comfortable working with rodents in a research setting. A demonstrated history of rodent colony management and/or animal research is a requirement for intermediate or senior level positions. All research staff contribute to colony maintenance. The laboratory lead position will provide general oversight of all transgenic mouse colonies, training and supervising junior staff, and laboratory operations for equipment service and maintenance and lab ordering of supplies and materials.

Examples of Duties Performed

Senior Level:

  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Perform experiments and tabulate and analyze research
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post analytical test process and evaluate results produced
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas
  • Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well established guidelines and instructions
  • Review, complete and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit and related issues
  • Review and implement lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required
  • Independently and creatively identify laboratory solutions
  • Independently Review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train junior team members
  • Assist with developing or develop protocol-specific systems and documents including process flows, training manuals, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) . Maintains subject level documentation and prepares documents, equipment and/or supplies
  • Assist with identifying issues related to operational efficiency and shares results with leadership
  • Provide laboratory science expertise and leadership in study design, study oversight, data management, data analysis and manuscript preparation to assist all levels of investigators, researchers and clinicians on new research activities across a wide range of disciplines
  • Serve as a resource to PIs and other stakeholders

Principal Level, including all of the above and:

  • {Work Lead} Oversee and provide informal leadership to the team members, including managing day-to-day priorities, evaluating and redistributing workloads on a temporary basis, and mentoring staff
  • {Work Lead} Provide input and feedback to leadership on team members’ overall performance, performance evaluations, opportunities for development, and process improvement initiatives
  • {Work Lead} Identify training and development opportunities for new and existing team members

Salary and Benefits

The salary range (or hiring range ) for this position has been established at

Senior Professional = $47,388 - $60,278

Principal Professional = $54,496 – $69,319

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range ) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
