Job Description Summary
The Bumgardner lab provides a unique opportunity for researchers interested in engaging in cutting edge translational immunology research. The Bumgardner lab pursues transplant immunology research to understand adaptive and innate immune responses that are triggered after transplantation of cells and solid organs. The purpose of these studies is to abrogate deleterious host immune responses and to harness protective immune responses in order to promote long-term survival of transplanted cells and organs.
The Bumgardner lab is poised for expansion providing a unique opportunity to a new Research Associate to join the team to assist with new murine and human immunology studies that are focused on understanding how alloimmune responses impact host CD8+ T cell mediated immune responses to viral pathogens. Opportunity is available to participate in publications, grant writing, mentoring talented students, and investigating novel cell subsets and immune mechanisms in both mouse models and in humans!
Research Associate 1-B/H participates in planning, design, execution, and management of research projects in a foundational (basic) biological/health science research laboratory investigating transplant immunology in the Department of Surgery, Division of Abdominal Transplantation; participates in developing and implementing goals and objectives of studies; designs and executes complex laboratory experiments in transplant immunology involving in vivo animal transplant models in mice, in vitro immunologic assays, immune assays using human cells, multichannel flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, molecular biology, confocal microscopy, intravital microscopy, and other complex imaging methodologies; collects, analyzes/interprets/organizes research data; assists with development and implementation of new and/or revised research methodologies and techniques; tests experimental designs, sampling techniques, and analytical methods and makes recommendations for utilization; assists in establishment of controls, criteria and research standards; performs critical analysis of literature relevant to research being undertaken; assists in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at national conferences/workshops and in the writing of project reports, articles and other documents; assists principal investigator in the preparation of proposals to obtain new or renewal of extramural funding in support of research; coordinates laboratory activities and work assignments of postdoctoral researchers, undergraduate/graduate students, and laboratory research staff; orders and manages laboratory supplies, coordinates communication with vendors, and oversees and coordinates periodic maintenance and testing of laboratory equipment; assists in the maintenance of mouse colonies; performs additional duties as assigned.
Minimum Education and Skills/Experience Required/Desired
Master's degree in an appropriate biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required. Experience in a biological/health science research capacity including animal handling is preferred. Current working experience with graphics software (Excel, SigmaPlot, etc.), data capture and management software (Survey Monkey, Qualtrics, REDCap etc) desirable. Requires successful completion of a background check; qualified candidates may be asked to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug screen.
