Summary
The Morganti Lab at the University of Kentucky, Sanders-Brown Center on Aging is looking for a Bioinformatics-Computational Biologist to join our highly interactive and collaborative research team.
You will join our research lab at the Sanders-Brown Center on Aging and Department of Neuroscience at the University of Kentucky. Our team is leading efforts toward understanding mechanisms of glial (astrocytes/oligodendrocyte) and neuroimmune (microglia, macrophages, lymphocytes) responses in aging, trauma, and neurodegeneration. Approaches in the lab utilize single cell/single nuclei RNA sequencing, multiomic (RNA/ATAC), single cell V(D)J profiling , bulk population sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics. In this role, you will support the integration of these assays across multiple rodent disease models as well as human tissue samples (fresh and postmortem). You will help to develop new computational pipelines as well utilize contemporary methodologies for these datasets. This is a great opportunity for career growth, while working in a rewarding research area that is constantly evolving with new technical and computation challenges to address.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Designs, develops, and implements:
I. Algorithms and computer software for omics-based datasets and integration of/between cross-platform/technology derived datasets
II. Data management and analysis solutions that aid in the storage, investigation, and dissemination of large datasets
III. Independent research projects, including design of research protocols for the proper collection, verification, and management of data.
2. Performs complex systems analysis of data and writes interpretive reports
3. Evaluates commercial as well as academic bioinformatic software
4. Trains other researchers on our team in the everyday use of analysis software and research databases
5. Assists with grant preparation and reporting of methods, data, and results

· Bachelor’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or related field plus 4 years of experience, OR master’s degree in computer science, bioinformatics, or related field plus 2 years of experience, OR combined education plus experience of 8 years.
· Experience in computational analysis and processing of one or more omics data types: single cell RNA sequencing, metabolomics/lipidomics, proteomics.
· Ability to multi-task, prioritize efforts, and execute independently- and collaboratively developed ideas in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
· PhD degree preferred, but MS with documented experience will be considered
· Experience with the analysis of data from high-throughput multi-omic data.
· Experience with standard bioinformatics software tools and packages.
· Fluency in understanding code written in multiple languages (e.g. R, Python, Java)
· A solid understanding of statistics and experience in statistical inference.
· Experience building web applications, web services, and user interfaces using standard software development tools: relational databases, version control systems, front-end Javascript.
· Experience in cloud computing (i.e. AWS).
