What we want

The Health Science Center (HSC) is looking for a Research Assistant to serve as a team member in the Center for Epigenetics and Disease Prevention. We desire an individual who subscribes to and supports our commitment as stated above. The Research Assistant will perform research activities to assist postdoctoral research associates and graduate students with research projects and laboratory management. The research assistant will assist with lab management. The successful applicant will bring their experience to the position and understand the demands of supporting executives in a fast-paced environment. This person must be professional, enjoy working in a high-volume environment and be able to apply strong organizational skills while being flexible in their daily routine. Required Education:

  • Appropriate bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with performing biomedical related lab work.

  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others, in compliance with Texas A&M System and TAMHSC guidelines.

  • Must be literate in the English language and be able to comprehend and follow effectively both written and verbal instructions.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills in English.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biomedical or a life science related field.

  • Experience with management and research related work.

  • Experience working with diverse individuals and communities.

Responsibilities:

  • Studies will be conducted using the standard techniques appropriate for biochemical, genetic, cellular, and animal model systems as they relate to important questions in cancer epigenetics. Participates in investigations utilizing a wide range of experimental procedures carried out at the in vivo, as well as the in vitro level, including co-IP, ChIP, PCR, Q-PCR, Western analysis, fluorescence microscopy, and tissue culture.

  • Conducts and monitors breeding of animals. Participates in breeding and genotyping of mice. Monitors and records mice morbidity. Collects organs for H&E, molecular, and immunohistochemical work. Administers drugs/compounds to study animals via intra-oral, intra-venous and intra-peritoneal routes.

  • Assists with lab organization, protocol management, and communicates with vendors.

  • Participates in weekly lab meetings within the center and with other internal and external departments. Participates in joint projects involving postdoctoral fellows and students in the lab. Provides assistance to graduate students and junior lab personnel. Assists with research grant proposals and provides publishable reports for conference and journal presentations. Conducts library research into new approaches, the preparation of tables, graphs, photographs and figures, and assists in manuscripts and grant proposals, all with the highest ethical standards and levels of rigor and reproducibility.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
