We are seeking a research scientist (staff scientist equivalent) to join an exciting new cancer research group. This person will be both motivated to grow a research project of their own and to train and mentor young scientists with the group. The lab is primarily affiliated with Fralin Biomedical Research Institute (FBRI) in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and jointly in the Children’s National Hospital Cancer and Immunology program. The lab’s work focuses on signaling pathways in pediatric and adult cancers—with a particular emphasis on therapeutically targeting enzyme vulnerabilities. Available projects include structurally and biochemically identifying mechanisms of substrate recruitment to methyltransferases, such as PRMT5, identifying protein-substrate interactions using mass spec/proteomics, studying cancer-immune regulation, and CRISPR screening for new target identification.

The senior scientist will have access to all Virginia Tech and Children’s National Hospital Resources, core facilities, and seminars, and will be provided growth and development opportunities. Our team supports all career paths of scientists and will actively engage in efforts of networking, leadership course training, attending research conferences and other activities to support your career development. Candidates must hold a PhD in a biology-related field with at least 2 years of postdoc experience. Excellent time management, laboratory documentation, scientific writing, and communication skills are required. This is a great opportunity to help shape a growing lab at the research and innovation center in Washington, DC. Salary will be in the $85,000-$95,000/year range, depending on experience.

• PhD, MD, or equivalent plus 2 years of postdoctoral research training.
• At least 2 first-author, peer reviewed research publications.
• Must be within 6 years of completion of your terminal degree.
• Track record of successful mentoring of students and technicians in the lab.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to think creatively to solve problems.
• Ability to independently design, execute and analyze experiments.
