Department Summary
The University of North Texas (UNT) is a Carnegie R1 research university and a federally designated Hispanic-Serving Institution and Minority-Serving Institution with a diverse population of over 42,000 students. The Denton, TX, community combines close proximity to one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the country (Dallas-Fort Worth) with an intimate and culturally vibrant college town atmosphere. The UNT Chemistry Department consists of 28 faculty members, 20 research-active faculty (including 2 faculty with joint appointments), approximately 100 graduate students, and approximately 250 undergraduate chemistry majors. The department is in a growth phase, having hired an endowed Welch Chair in Chemistry and four Assistant Professors in the past three years, and with plans to hire up to six additional tenure-track faculty over the next few years. Our department has a strong culture of interdisciplinary collaboration, with specific strengths in computational chemistry, materials chemistry, and catalysis. New faculty have the opportunity to contribute to these areas and interfacing with a growing interdisciplinary emphasis in Chemical Biology within the Chemistry Department, in collaboration with the Institutes of Research of Excellence, including the BioDiscovery Institute (BDI) and the Advanced Environmental Research Insitute (AERI), as well as other units on campus. The Department of Biological Sciences is one of four departments in the College of Science. The Department has over 40 full-time faculty, 175 graduate students, 3,000 undergraduate students, 36 postdoctoral fellows and research scientists, and 13 Adjunct Faculty and Lecturers. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to interdisciplinary research and teaching in areas including Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Toxicology, and Plant Biology. We offer Bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, as well as Master’s and Ph.D. degree programs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. Position Summary
The College of Science and the Departments of Biology and Chemistry at the University of North Texas, a Hispanic-Serving Institution and a Carnegie Research Tier 1 institution, invite applications for a tenure-track position in Environmental Chemistry at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Preference will be given to candidates who have promising plans to develop an active and visible research program in any area of Environmental Chemistry, including but not limited to the identification and quantification of contaminants in biological (cells, fluids, tissues) and/or environmental (soil, water, air) samples, as well as environmental remediation. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain funding to support a vibrant research program in the candidate’s discipline and engage in undergraduate and graduate education by teaching courses in their area of expertise. Departmental assignment in either Biological Sciences or Chemistry will be determined in consultation with the candidate.
The successful candidate is encouraged to develop interdisciplinary collaborations within and between departments at UNT. The successful candidate should have an interest and participate in our growing undergraduate degree program and graduate programs in biology (http://biology.unt.edu/graduate-programs ) and chemistry (http://chemistry.unt.edu/graduate-program ) and is expected to help foster their continued growth along with other faculty members through instruction and research. Teaching responsibilities may include both undergraduate and graduate courses.
Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have 1) earned a doctoral degree in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, or a related field, 2) a proven record or strong potential to obtain external funding to support an active research program, 3) a growing record of scholarship and publication in higher tier journals appropriate to the applicants’ field of study, and 4) potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
