Position Overview
The College of Education, Health and Human Sciences at the University of Idaho has a two-year position (beginning Spring 2023) available for a postdoctoral scholar to contribute to Dr. Vanessa Anthony-Stevens’ educational research projects, Indigenous Knowledge for Effective Education Program (IKEEP), a new project Cultivating Relationships (CR), and the Cultivating Indigenous Research Communities for Leadership in Education and STEM (CIRCLES) Alliance. The postdoc will primarily focus on the research projects under Dr. Vanessa Anthony-Stevens but will also be involved in supporting EHHS work towards its goals of expanding academic specializations in Indigenous research and education. A key part of this role will be to help build new professional learning programs for educators serving Indigenous communities and supporting EHHS to expand research capacity that promotes reciprocal and sovereignty-affirming partnerships with Indigenous communities.
As part of EHHS, the Postdoc will be connected to American Indian Studies affiliates and the McCall Outdoor Science School Certificate in Environmental Education and Science Communication to build a stronger community of scholars focused on Indigenous and land-based knowledge. The postdoc will provide co-mentorship to graduate students and undergraduate students. The postdoc will also take on academic mentorship responsibilities by helping facilitate graduate student and faculty workshops where new and experienced scholars can share research and publication proposals focused on Indigenous research partnerships and tribal nation building
This is a full-time, 12-month academic position. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2023. ABD candidates with an anticipated degree conferral date prior to the position start date are welcome to apply.
Unit Overview
Indigenous Knowledge for Effective Education Program (IKEEP) at the University of Idaho prepares and certifies culturally responsive Indigenous teachers to meet the unique needs of Native American students in K-12 schools. IKEEP scholars are part of a teaching cohort committed to innovation in indigenous education.
Native American/Alaskan Native youths experience greater academic success when their cultures, languages and community values are included in classroom pedagogy.
With the support of the University of Idaho’s MOU Tribes (Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Confederated Tribes of the Yakama Nation, Kalispel Tribe of Indians, Kootenai Tribe, Nez Perce Tribe, Shoshone-Bannock Tribes, Shoshone-Paiute Tribes and Spokane Tribe of Indians), the purpose of IKEEP is to recruit, prepare, certify and place culturally responsive American Indian educators into teaching positions in schools with high populations of Native American students. IKEEP supports scholars from additional Tribal communities as well.

Key Accountability Conduct Research by:
Job Duties
  • Supporting and furthering research projects under Dr. Vanessa Anthony-Stevens.
  • Providing leadership in supporting EHHS to expand academic specializations in Indigenous research and education.
  • Assisting with building a new professional learning programs for educators serving Indigenous communities and expansion of institutional capacity to promote reciprocal and sovereignty-
    affirming partnerships with Indigenous communities.
  • Playing an active role in designing and developing new graduate and faculty programs.
  • Contributing to research agendas addressing systemic barriers and mapping new possibilities for higher education-tribal partnerships.
  • Engaging in research and teaching collaborations with extended team of graduate students,
    interdisciplinary faculty, and leaders in tribal education in the Northwest.
Key Accountability Provide Teaching & Advising by:
Job Duties
  • Collaborating with IKEEP, CR, and CIRCLES principal investigators, post-docs, and staff.
  • Interacting with students in the IKEEP, CR, CIRLCES programs to provide mentorship and
    develop synergies for curricular and research apprenticeship programming.
  • Participating in the development and delivery courses and/or workshops that meet the needs
    of IKEEP, CR, and CIRCLES efforts.
  • Becoming familiar with the regional tribal education efforts and needs as well as numerous
    community and governmental agencies with whom they interact. This will allow a deeper and
    first-hand understanding of Tribal Nation needs, desires, resources, and innovations, and
    relationship building with individuals with vested interest in Indigenous education and
    research.
Key Accountability Presentation of Research Results by:
Job Duties
  • Contributing to the development and dissemination of research in their field.
  • Developing relationships with individuals and groups in EHHS, IKEEP, CR, and CIRCLES, as well
    as individuals and groups outside to discuss shared research interests, and to explore
    potential future collaboration.
  • Supporting interdisciplinary collaborations with other colleges, institutions, and tribal
    communities.

Position Qualifications


Required Experience
  • Experience in collecting and analyzing empirical data
  • Experience working with indigenous populations

Required Education
  • Ph.D. in Education, Indigenous Studies, Anthropology, Natural Resources with a social science focus, or a related social scientific discipline.

Required Licensures, Certifications or other
Additional Preferred
  • Experience working with Tribal Nations, Native and Indigenous communities, and K-12 educators in formal or informal contexts
  • Record of communicating research results via peer-reviewed publications and presentations
  • Ability to design and teach academic courses
  • Ability to mentor and supervise undergraduate and graduate students
  • Experience with community-engaged research and qualitative methodologies
  • Enrolled member of a U.S. Federally recognized Tribe (Morton v. Mancari, 1974)
