Title Postdoctoral Fellow in Pharmacology & Toxicology (Parasitic Disease Research)
Specific Title
Appointment Type Postdoctoral Fellow
Department IUSM - Pharmacology & Toxicology
Campus IU School of Medicine Indianapolis
Position Summary
“Cellular signaling and gene expression in the parasite Toxoplasma gondii"
We are accepting applications for a postdoctoral fellow interested in the study of cellular signaling and the regulation of gene expression in the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasma is an opportunistic pathogen that causes severe disease in congenitally infected infants and immune compromised patients. Toxoplasma is a significant clinical challenge because the parasite converts into a latent tissue cyst form that evades immunity and current drugs. The tissue cysts are central to pathogenesis, transmission, and behavioral changes in the host.
Our laboratory seeks to solve this clinical problem by obtaining a better understanding of the mechanisms driving tissue cyst formation. We use state-of-the-art multi-disciplinary approaches to interrogate how the parasite alters translation and reprograms its genome to convert to the latent stage of infection.
The successful applicant will contribute to exciting projects examining the myriad ways gene expression is regulated in the context of cyst formation. This includes study of multiple mechanisms including transcription, epigenetics, epitranscriptomics, and translational control. Our long-term goal is to identify novel points of therapeutic intervention that will thwart the development and maintenance of Toxoplasma tissue cysts
