Title Postdoctoral Fellow, Physics (Nuclear Theory / Astrophysics)
Appointment Status Non-Tenure Track
Department IU Bloomington Cntr For Explor of En & Matter
Position Summary
The IU theoretical nuclear physics group has an active and diverse program addressing fundamental questions in nuclear physics and astrophysics. Horowitz works in a range of areas, including: neutron rich dense matter in astrophysics, neutron rich skins of atomic nuclei studied with parity violation in the PREX and CREX experiments, nuclear and neutrino interactions in supernovae, molecular dynamics simulations of neutron star crust, nuclear pasta, and white dwarf crystallization, production of continuous gravitational waves by rotating neutron stars and by possible compact dark objects. Szczepaniak directs the Joint Physics Analysis Center which brings together theorists and experimentalists working on problems in QCD reaction theory, hadron spectroscopy, and phenomenology. Liao’s research focuses on the properties and phase structures of QCD matter at extreme temperatures and densities as well as novel phenomena in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC such as anomalous chiral transport, vorticity and polarization, heavy flavor transport, jet energy loss, exotic hadron production, etc. Passemar works on fundamental symmetries and effective field theories.
The group is a part of the Center for the Exploration of Energy and Matter (CEEM) at IU which includes research in experimental condensed matter and nuclear physics. Indiana University has excellent large scale computing facilities. Opportunities are available on a variety of research projects according to the interests of candidates.
