Summary

The School of Information (UMSI) is a progressive, interdisciplinary professional school offering a Bachelor of Science in Information (BSI), a Master of Science in Information (MSI), a Master of Health Informatics (MHI), and a Ph.D. Our mission is to create and share knowledge so that people will use information – with technology – to build a better world.

The UMSI Career Development Office (CDO) is a progressive, fast-paced career development office managing career development education, services, resources and programs that are both curricular and co-curricular in nature. Reporting to the Associate Director of Career Development, the Assistant Director will be responsible for coordinating activities that are a critical function to forward the School’s goals for continued prominence in the information educational field.

Responsibilities*

Manage Career Coaching for Undergraduate Population and AMDP  30%

Provide individualized professional career coaching to all UMSI students pursuing internships and full-time jobs with a specialized focus on undergraduate students. Manage BSI and AMDP career coaching developing relationships with these students and proactively tracking their progress toward reaching career goals. Assess coaching needs sharing recommendations back to the Associate Director.

Coaching will include reviewing/editing resumes, cover letters, portfolios, LinkedIn profiles, and job search correspondence; advising on search strategy approaches (networking, online tools); career transition, if applicable; and coaching on interviewing and negotiation approaches (including conducting mock interviews).

Develops and assesses outreach campaigns for target populations (i.e., newly admitted Accelerated Master’s Degree Program and external transfer students) to promote interventions for student learning and career development.

Assist students in the exploration of career options across industries. Connect students with alumni and employers that match their career interests.

Exercise discretion and independent judgment with respect to matters of significance pertaining to advising/coaching and student development to ensure compliance with FERPA and Clery Act. Practice and adhere to advising/coaching practices in compliance with NACE professional standards and policies. 


UMSI Internship Program Management 25%
Manage the UMSI Internship Program to support curricular or academic-based internships across the BSI and AMDP degree programs. Recommend, develop and implement policies, procedures and programs related to internships. Collaborate with Associate Director to identify future program plans or needs, and propose adjusted policies or processes needed to ensure equitable support and access for all students. Manage continuous improvement through metric development and systematically analyzing data from semesterly student and supervisor surveys to contribute to and guide future direction of the internship program goals and objectives. Research and provide guidance on decisions that affect the welfare of students in internships across industries, both nationally and abroad. 

Review all student Internship Proposals to independently determine eligibility for earning credit/fulfilling degree requirements and ensuring students have identified learning objectives for their internship experience. Monitors internship progress to ensure students meet goals and objectives of the internship program for a passing grade. Interpret policies and procedures of the UMSI Internship Program for students and employers who hire our students. Serve as the primary point of contact for employers when BSI and AMDP students are taking part in the UMSI Internship Program.

Oversee and manage internal internship process flow, including functional supervision of Career Development Coordinator, to succinctly coordinate the promotion and execution of the UMSI Internship Program. Lead coordination and facilitation of internship information sessions and orientations sessions. Oversee the processing of course permissions and Curricular Practical Training Advisor forms for international students, liaise with UMSI and UM Registrar to ensure compliance with university curricular policies and guidelines to ensure students are working within Visa laws and guidelines so as not to jeopardize Visa status.

Work as part of the Internship Program management team to ensure streamlined policies and processes. 

Collaborate with Associate Director to support UMSI Internship Grant, leading M-Compass systems updates and coordinating application review process. 

Student Engagement 15% 

Design and develop engaging career education events and programs for UMSI students. Facilitate a range of workshops, presentations, and panels. Utilize appropriate program outcomes assessment to direct program goals and delivery. Maintain an area of expertise in information-related careers across industries. Develop career resources in alignment with student career interests, current job search and recruiting/labor trends. Collaborate with UMSI faculty on class presentations upon request. Provide support and management for CDO systems used to engage with students as needed. ?

 

Supervision/Leadership 10%

Provide leadership, supervision and mentorship for graduate interns and instructional aides. Lead recruitment and selection of graduate interns and instructional aides. Functionally supervise Career Development Coordinator on internship program processes and support. Contribute to CDO’s mission conducting external benchmarking and research on key topics. Regularly represent CDO as a presenter at collaborative events with OASA and ELO.

 

Course Design and Instruction 20% (this does not reflect instructional overage for full instructional responsibilities)

  • Internship Courses: Design and implement curriculum for online undergraduate student internship courses. Develop instructional plans to meet course objectives while creating an inclusive learning environment. Utilize learning management system (Canvas), in-person advising, and videoconferencing to  deliver course content and assessment. 

  • Career Course: Design and implement instruction for a career course for undergraduate students.  Develop instructional plans to meet course objectives while creating an inclusive learning environment. Utilize learning management system (Canvas) and in-person instruction to meet course objectives and assessment.   

  • Liaise with the UMSI Registrar team on the scheduling and promotion of CDO courses in Wolverine Access, making sure dates, times, and settings are correctly updated each semester

This role will also include a 5% overload LEO Lecturer appointment. As a Lecturer at UMSI, you will help, provide instructional support for curricular-based internship courses, and co-instruct curricular-based career education courses. At UMSI, we demonstrate respect for students as individuals and foster a respectful atmosphere in the online learning environment. You will also work collaboratively with lead instructors, other instructional team members, and UMSI staff (who help with administration and student advising/life functions) to ensure that students receive an excellent education and are aware of support services in the larger UM and UMSI communities. This lecturer position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience in a related field. 

  • Minimum 2 years experience in a related role advising, coaching, counseling and/or coordinating programs for students.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build relationships with a diverse population of students, staff, and faculty.

  • Team-oriented, flexible and customer-service oriented manner.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment in handling complex, confidential matters.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to accomplish multiple tasks autonomously and efficiently.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office products, Google applications, and web-based systems; comfortable conducting online research.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability with a rapidly changing environment, ability to work in a collaborative, inclusive, and open workspace

  • Strong desire to contribute to a dynamic team impacting students’ career education.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or related program. 

  • Demonstrated experience providing career or academic coaching/advising with a college population.

  • Knowledge of career development, career decision making, and professional job search strategies.

  • Experience developing, delivering and evaluating presentations and programs.

  • Excellent presentation and facilitation skills.

  • Desire to learn, innovate, and integrate feedback into service delivery to continually improve impact.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks in a high-traffic and high-demand environment. 

  • Experience with current career services technologies i.e., recruiting systems (Symplicity), online career research databases, career networking sites, or eportfolio platforms.

  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the information profession.

  • Knowledge of UMSI’s degree programs, curriculum, and specializations.

Work Schedule

Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. May require working during non-business hours and on weekends. Some hybrid remote work may be possible, in accordance with UMSI Remote Work Policy and with supervisor approval, however this role does have an expectation of some onsite work. Remote work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change depending upon business needs.

Work Locations

Will require travel to multiple locations on and off campus. Will occasionally require domestic travel.

Additional Information

If selected for an interview, candidates will be asked to conduct a sample 10 minute presentation on a career topic, as well as a resume review providing feedback in the form of an advising email.
