Description of Position

The student population of Contra Costa College (CCC) reflects its surrounding diverse communities. CCC is a proud Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and serves predominately historically disadvantaged and under-represented student groups including African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Latinx students. CCC is situated in a socioeconomically diverse, resilient an culturally vibrant community. This is a full-time, tenure-track, academic position in the Africana/African American, Chicano, Ethnic Studies Department at Contra Costa College in San Pablo, California. The department is looking for a full-time professor for our Africana/African American Studies Program to help inspire, educate, and empower the diverse community of students to transform their lives and communities.

We are looking for a colleague who will demonstrate strong African American discipline expertise, and show sensitivity to (and understanding of) the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds and abilities of community college students.

We are looking for a colleague who shares a strong commitment to racial and social justice, and who is inspired to use anti-racist pedagogies that close equity gaps by recognizing, understanding, and respecting the perspectives of all students.

The successful applicant will be qualified to teach introductory African American-focused courses in History, Humanities, Political Science, and Sociology.

Initial salary placement for full-time, tenure track positions is based on academic degree(s), upper/graduate level units earned, and/or qualifying related professional occupation experience which ranges from $60,294 to $99,876 per year (Up to $117k). Adjunct instructor rate is $68.91-$114.14 per hour (up to $131.15).

Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to contractual duties, all full-time faculty are expected to participate actively in their disciplines, department activities, and the general intellectual life and governance of the college. Part of the teaching assignment may be in the evening and/or online. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. advancing equitable student learning through dedicated, exemplary instruction in accordance with established course outlines;
2. participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; developing and implementing student learning outcomes assessment processes for courses and programs;
3. collaborating in the development and revision of curriculum and in program review;
4. engaging in department program improvement initiatives;
5. participating in department, division, and college committees;
6. participating in professional development activities, both departmental and college-wide;
7. maintaining current knowledge in the subject matter area and effective teaching/ learning strategies;
8. maintaining appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics;
9. informing students of course requirements, evaluation procedures and attendance requirements;
10. preparing and grading class assignments and examinations and informing students of their academic progress;
11. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines;
12. posting and holding sufficient and regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy;
13. participating in College’s shared governance processes.

Minimum Qualification-Education/Experience

Understanding of and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, sexual orientation and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, staff and faculty.
Master’s degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies
OR
Bachelor’s degree in African-American/Black/Africana Studies AND Master’s degree in Ethnic Studies

A valid California Community College Instructor Credential authorizing full- time instruction in African American Studies

Desirable Qualifications

Highly qualified candidates will possess knowledge, skills, and experience that address the desirable qualifications below. Responses to the supplemental questions below allow the applicant to describe how they meet these qualifications.

1. Demonstrated commitment to teaching and student learning, including experience working with students at the college level in an academic capacity (Instructor, teaching assistant, tutor, etc.)

2. Proficiency and/or experience in teaching college-level African American Studies courses.

3. Demonstrated sensitivity to (and the ability to) motivate and teach community college students of diverse class positions, racial and ethnic backgrounds, cultures, religious affiliations, citizenship status, varied levels of academic preparation, learning styles, and or abilities. 4. Experience developing dynamic and equitable approaches to teaching in multiple modalities including face to face, hybrid, and fully online.

5. Commitment to participate in departmental processes of curricular review, assessment of student learning outcomes, and course development. 6. Commitment to equity, professional growth, and innovation and improvement of teaching.

7. Commitment to community engagement.

8. Commitment to the development of a culturally-responsive program in the innovation and improvement of teaching in African American Studies.

9. Commitment to assuming faculty responsibilities beyond the classroom in a shared governance environment.

10. Experience, training, and commitment to work with students underprepared to do college-level reading and writing.

United Faculty has an agency fee of .55% of gross pay plus $2.50.

Selection Process

Applications will be screened to ensure the applicant meets the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.
1. The applications, cover letters, answers to required supplemental questions, resumes, unofficial college transcripts, and other supporting materials submitted by all qualified applicants will be reviewed by a screening committee. Those who are deemed to possess the highest degree of desirable qualifications will be invited to the college at their own expense.
2. During the campus visit, each applicant will be interviewed and may be asked to conduct a demonstration appropriate to the discipline. Selected interviewees may be invited to present an entire lecture in front of a class. Responses to the interview questions and demonstration will be rated by the interview committee.
3. Based upon the overall rating, a small number of applicants will be invited at their own expense to the campus for an interview with the college president and vice president of instruction.
4. After consultation with the interview committee, the college president will make the final recommendation for employment to the chancellor and the governing board of the Contra Costa Community College District.
5. Upon hire, the successful candidate must meet the conditions of employment. Finalists must provide verification of transcripts. TB test, physical examination, fingerprinting/conviction clearance and proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States.
