The College of Lake County is searching for an experienced HR Generalist to join our Human Resources team in serving approximately 1,800 faculty and staff who are committed to the values of integrity, inclusion, unity, purpose, compassion and excellence in student success. This is an employee-facing position in talent management with high impact and responsibility for ensuring accurate appointment and pay processing for faculty in collaboration and partnership with employees as well as numerous leaders and staff members in multiple departments. This role will be key in strengthening our culture and employee experience, putting business acumen to work by using data to influence decisions and improving processes, empowering supervisors, and ideally will evolve into a coach and consultant to both leaders and employees in Educational Affairs.

Required Qualification

  1. Associate’s degree with three years’ experience in payroll, human resources, or related field or,
  2. Bachelor’s degree with two years’ experience in payroll, human resources or related field
  3. Demonstrated ability to effectively understand and interpret HR and payroll policies and practices, providing options and recommendations within the parameters of acceptability in a thorough and objective manner
  4. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an ability to build/foster strong trusting relationships, influence leaders and develop solutions to achieve results
  5. Demonstrated analytical, problem-solving and data auditing/reconciliation abilities
  6. Self-directed, self-motivated, agile to change and ability to take initiative to identify and anticipate division needs and effectively manage conflicting priorities and deadlines
  7. Ability to understand and use relevant HR technology systems to support business needs.
  8. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel
  9. Proven ability to work effectively and constructively with persons of diverse cultures, language groups, and abilities; demonstrate sensitivity to and ability to work with the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Summary of Essential Functions

Project and Process Management 70%
  • Coordinates manual payroll for full- and part-time faculty on a bi-weekly basis, serving as the third step in the ecosystem of pay (Academic Divisions, Educational Affairs, and Payroll being the other steps).
  • Prepares notice of appointments, contracts and faculty spreadsheets of teaching load hours and other assignments to be submitted to payroll for processing.
  • Coordinates and/or prepares various standard and ad hoc reports, benefits, and records as required within the adjunct faculty bargaining agreement, including compensation records, contracts issued, bargaining unit lists, good-faith offer lists, non-tenure lists, hours tracking and other reports and records. Process inactive part-time faculty completes retiree worksheets.
  • Ensures that the adjunct faculty bargaining agreement is applied with consistency. Develops strong relationships with Union Leadership. Supports leaders in contract language and serves on the negotiating team. Supports and advises grievance responses.
  • Ensures that human resources policies and practices are applied with consistency. Assists employee relations HR staff in investigations related to employee concerns, as needed.
  • Works with HR, Payroll and Educational Affairs staff and faculty to proactively identify continuous improvement opportunities and creative solutions to support business needs. This may include reimaging and documenting processes and procedures, conducting stay/exit interviews, and/or analyzing pay and employment trends.
  • Participates in the once-in-a-generation Enterprise Resources Planning implementation project (software system that automates core business processes for optimal performance). This will include new underlying technology systems for human resources, payroll, and educational affairs.

Employee/Customer Service 20%
  • Responds to faculty questions and issues in a timely manner and troubleshoots issues in collaboration with impacted faculty members, Educational Affairs, Academic Divisions and Payroll staff and union leaders.
  • Presents and participates in faculty orientations and various inter-departmental meetings across the College.
  • Supports newly hired faculty and the Talent Acquisition HR staff with new hire paperwork and on-boarding during academic year peaks.
  • Coaches supervisors on positive employee relations strategies to maintain open and direct communication with employees.

Other 10%
  • Participates on strategic and/or functional cross-departmental teams, committees and councils at the request of the Human Resource leadership.
  • Participates in professional associations/organizations and educational activities that enhance Human Resources competencies, knowledge, business and interpersonal skills. Remain knowledgeable of current state and federal laws, regulations, and best practices in the field of Human Resources ensuring the College’s policies and programs conform to laws and regulations and are designed to attract and retain employees.
  • Acts as a back-up for HR welcome center staff as needed.
  • Performs any and all other duties assigned that support the mission, vision, values and strategic initiatives of College of Lake County and goals of human resources department.
