Associate Faculty (PT) : Psychology at Monroe Correctional Complex

SALARY: Five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $5,386.28.

LOCATION: Monroe Washington

DESCRIPTION:

The instructor will be responsible for teaching and providing leadership in the Psychology Department. Responsibilities include the following: teaching assigned classes to a diverse student body in a variety of formats within a correctional environment; developing curriculum; preparing teaching materials; developing and assessing student learning outcomes to evaluate student work; assigning grades; maintaining required records; and advising and consulting with students to support their success. Other responsibilities include participation in the following: achievement of the College’s mission and goals; upholding the College’s values; governance of the college via department and division work; committee assignments; required professional development and college in-service activities (including employee orientation and college compliance trainings); personal and program evaluation. The teaching assignment may include early morning or late afternoon/evening classes. This position is on a quarter-to-quarter basis that reports to the Associate Dean of Corrections Education. Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To:

Faculty contribute content expertise in one or more subject areas to support the achievement of identified learning outcomes in courses and programs, as well as the College Wide Abilities (see College Wide Abilities, below).

1)Facilitate a learning centered environment by:

  • Providing instruction to students through various delivery methods, including classroom/laboratory instruction, eLearning, and learning community activities.
  • Utilizing teaching strategies that facilitate student learning and student success.
  • Preparing clear and measurable objectives, course syllabi, course materials and learning experiences for each course.
  • Maintaining appropriate course records and documentation.
  • Designing, developing, assessing, and overseeing program curricula.
  • Implementing assessment measures that achieve course, program, and college learning outcomes, and using the results to strengthen the curricula.
  • Maintaining office hours.
  • Providing academic advising and mentoring students.
  • Participating in outreach for student recruitment and access to services.
  • Maintaining current knowledge within the appropriate discipline and within the teaching profession.

 


2) Support the goals and objectives of the college through:

  • Meeting requirements for specific programs and for accreditation.
  • Participating in college-sponsored professional development activities, college wide meetings and department/division/faculty meetings.
  • Supporting articulation initiatives with regional schools and colleges.
  • Promoting student recruitment, retention, and successful completion of programs.
  • Maintaining ongoing communications with community organizations, other local colleges, and public agencies in support of student learning.
  • Participating in college leadership, governance, and operational activities.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues, staff, and community members.
  • Serving on college committees.
  • Complying with college policies, rules, and procedures.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

 


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) in Psychology, and Master’s degree (MA or MS) in Psychology with experience focused on adult or secondary learning.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching of Psychology courses with adults or young adults in a community college setting or adult education setting at the undergraduate level.
  • Excellent English speaking, writing, listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

 


DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
:

  • Two academic years of experience successfully teaching Psychology.
  • Curriculum development experience focused on vulnerable students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Successful experience using technology to enhance basic reading and writing instruction.
  • Demonstrated leadership in developing curriculum.
  • Demonstrated understanding of both affective and academic needs of under-prepared students.
  • Experience using classroom-based research to improve student learning outcomes.
  • Experience or knowledge of multiple approaches to teaching and learning, such as incorporating a variety of technologies into the classroom, teaching in learning communities or using other innovative techniques.

 


PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed in a classroom within a correctional facility and requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. The ability to speak clearly and fully comprehend written and spoken English is essential. Instructors are required to use a computer in the work environment. The teaching environment is based on off-line instruction in that students do not have access to the internet but we do have an intranet to deliver material to students.

 


COMPENSATION:

Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $5,386.28 at Step A.

 


WORK SCHEDULE:

The work schedule is based on an eleven-week quarterly schedule and could vary each quarter.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • You must be able to meet the requirements for employment by the Department of Corrections including a background check.
  • You must document your citizenship or employment authorization within three days of hire.
  • You must qualify for vocational certification (see required qualifications).
  • This position is part of a bargaining unit subject to a collective bargaining agreement.
  • Position is subject to a criminal background check.
  • All new positions are contingent upon funding.
