The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) discovers, develops, teaches, and applies knowledge and technology that enable students, clientele, and citizens of North Carolina and others to improve the quality of their lives and to enhance the agricultural, economic, environmental, and social well being of the state and world and to create and extend new knowledge through scientific research and extension in agriculture and the life sciences.

The CALS Communications Services Department consists of writers, editors, graphic designers, and videographers who provide marketing and communications assistance for the administration, faculty, and staff CALS. This group provides the communication network for the college and works with University Communication Services on broader issues that support NC State and the state of North Carolina.

Essential Job Duties

The Director of Marketing and Communications (DMC) is one of 20 organizational leadership positions that directly reports to the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS). The Director is responsible for planning, creating and executing a comprehensive marketing, communication, and public relations program for the College to promote broad reaching accomplishments and their impacts to key partners and stakeholders across the University and externally throughout the State and region. The Director provides overall leadership for the CALS Communication Services Department comprised of 11 communications professionals.

The primary goal of the DMC, and his/her Department under their direction, is to position the college as a national and international leader and the “Go To Place for Solutions”, by proactively telling the stories of the College, focusing on the college’s key strengths in the areas of academics, research, extension and strategic and administrative accomplishments. The Director will build and maintain the brand of the college and NC State University across all communication platforms. The Director serves as the primary point of contact for outside media, University News Services, and college faculty and staff for all communications and marketing, both routine and in the event of a significant news event. The Director is crucial to positioning the college as a bold leader.

The position operates with a high level of discretion and with minimal supervision, while exercising day to day decision making that has a major impact on the image and credibility of the College and NC State University.

Unit Leadership – 30%
  • Provide strong leadership and vision for the CALS Communications Services Department including budgetary oversight and supervision of 11 staff (including the Dean’s Public Communications Specialist housed in Patterson Hall, and indirect oversight for Extension communications).
  • Build a cohesive collegial team that provides proactive communication and marketing solutions for CALS.
  • Lead public affairs for CALS including media relations, news, periodicals, and communications for external audiences.
  • Periodically reevaluate and redesign CALS Magazine, including online and mobile devise accessibility.
  • Meet regularly with directors, department heads, and CALS Advancement.
  • Provide communication linkages across CALS and service as a resources for other units on their internal communications.
  • Work with CALS leaders to develop an appropriate business model for the Communication Services Department.
  • Work with Extension IT Director to coordinate a system for electronic publications. This may include shared responsibility and/or shared employees.

Strategic Planning Activities – 20%
  • Research, craft, and disseminate the College’s position on high-profile issues with the potential for media and community attention, working closely with University Communications.
  • Develop, implement, and is responsible for an integrated strategic communications plan to:
    • Advance the College’s strategic vision and brand identity as part of NC State and in line with the College Strategic Plan.
    • Broaden local, state and national awareness and value of CALS programs and impacts to the economic, societal and intellectual prosperity of North Carolinians.
    • Increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences.
    • Support our stakeholders’ communication needs when appropriate.
  • Advise the Dean and other college leaders regarding sensitive public relations and emergency situations.
  • Develop short and long term accountability metrics and time lines for branding, marketing and communications and make key management decision accordingly.
  • Lead the development of key organizational messaging, media and reports.
  • Review and analyze existing reporting metrics and other data bases to provide key impacts and information for marketing and communication needs.
  • Assemble information and draft responses on behalf of the Dean to inquiries from state agencies, UNC General Administration, NCSU, other institutions, etc.
  • Serve as the primary media contact for CALS

Communications & Marketing – 40%
  • Create and implement a consistent external communications and marketing plan to build the brand of the college and NC State through a broad range of communications that showcase the College’s key strengths, excellent faculty, staff, students, and products to all audiences.
  • Lead messaging and strategies for online content that engages audience segments. Determine to whom, where, when and via which media to disseminate information.
  • Analyze the effectiveness of the communication and marketing plan used by the college in its efforts to promote its programs, offerings, and services and design strategies to make adjustments as needed.
  • Develop and enforce NC State and the College brand consistency across all communications platforms, including traditional and nontraditional outlets for print, web, film and other media.
  • Build media relations and networks to disseminate key organizational success stories and messages.
  • Research, analyze, and track story placement, including both print and other media, in creative outlets to market and communicate CALS news and achievements to enhance fund raising efforts.
  • Lead and provide guidance, training and support for the college administrative communications and media responses
  • Lead employee training and development in media relations, marketing and communications.
  • Manage all media contacts for the college.
  • Manage and direct webpage content ensuring that new and consistent information (article links, stories, and events) is posted regularly.
  • Develop and publish materials aimed at the recruitment of high performing students to a bold college offering experiential learning.
  • Establish close working relationships and serve as College liaison to University Communications, the Chancellor’s Office, Admissions, the Alumni Association, and others regarding information about the College’s programs, discoveries, faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Project Management – 10%
  • Manage and direct special communication projects for the Dean’s office.
  • Provide oversight for the development, implementation and use of the CALS brand and its use with partnership programs and visibility; including development of brand guidelines and procedures.
  • Direct the development, distribution and coordination of all CALS print and electronic information including key year-end reports.
  • Efficiently and effectively manage the Communications Services budget to achieve the strategic communication and marketing goals of the College.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Post-baccalaureate credentials in journalism, communications, public relations, marketing, agriculture, life science, or a relevant undergraduate degree and a minimum of five (5) years or greater of relevant experience may be substituted for the advanced degree.
  • Experience in leading and managing a team of communications professionals.
  • Experience in leading and coordinating public educational media relations’ campaigns from concept to completion.
  • Experience in leading communications and messaging for organizational change.
  • Experience working with and leading dynamic team projects; building and sustaining meaningful professional relationships that position the organization, its people and programs for success.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability in the creation and implementation of a dynamic, multidimensional, issues-based communication plan.
  • Demonstrated ability in working proactively and establishing influential relationships with the media.
  • Expertise is social media strategy and implementation.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills (oral and written) along with the ability to work with faculty, administrators, and volunteers in a complex organization.
  • Proven skills in written and verbal communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5-7 years or greater experience in journalism, communications, agriculture, life science, publications, or media and public relations.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills along with the ability to work with faculty, administrators, and volunteers in a large, complex research university.
  • Knowledge of and experience in the land grant system, agriculture, and life sciences.
