The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.
Essential Job Duties
The Alternative Crops Research Associate position will develop, install, and coordinate highly collaborative agronomic research focused on new and emerging crops that fit within North Carolina’s row cropping systems. The Research Associate will supervise and train part-time employees, and undergraduate and graduate students. The Research Associate will also engage in extension activities and be responsible for organizing field day events, on-farm research trials and demonstration plots. In this capacity, the Research Associate will help train farmers and Extension agents.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree with at least three (3) years of independent research experience in an agriculturally-related field.
- Experience hauling heavy machinery and familiar with small-plot research equipment including tractors, drills, combines, etc.
Other Required Qualifications
- Strong understanding of experimental design and statistical analysis.
- Excellent verbal/communication skills.
- Ability to develop scientifically-sound research trials to answer fundamental agronomic questions.
- Deep understanding of North Carolina’s farming systems.
- Ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience in agronomic research.
- Master’s Degree or PhD in an agriculturally related field.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
The position will be required to drive fleet vehicles to haul equipment’s and visit research stations. The position will also drive tractors to plant trials.
