Summary

The Director of Athletic Counseling will work directly with sport administration, coaches, physicians, athletic medicine personnel, sports dieticians, strength and conditioning personnel, and other allied health personnel to lead and deliver comprehensive mental health and lifetime wellness services for University of Michigan varsity student athletes. The Director of Athletic Counseling will have a wide-range of clinical and administrative daily responsibilities, including but not limited to: overseeing the Athletic Counseling team; providing individual mental health and substance abuse assessments; providing individual, group, and team mental health, counseling, and performance psychology services for varsity student-athletes; respond to crises and requests for consultation with other department staff members as appropriate; coordinate and participate in health and wellness initiatives; collaborate with various campus entities on issues related to student well-being and development; assist with the development and implementation of varsity student-athlete programming for leadership development, personal growth, health and wellness and community; and performing other duties as assigned.

    Responsibilities*

    Essential Functions:

    • Hire, direct, supervise, and evaluate members of the Athletic Counseling Team.
    • Clinical application and administration of comprehensive mental health and lifetime wellness services for student-athletes under the supervision of team physicians.
    • Maintain confidentiality of all patients in adherence with State and Federal laws and policies.
    • Provide individual mental health and substance abuse assessments for student-athletes, which may include positive drug screen referrals and the development of AOD treatment plans.
    • Provide individual and group psychological services to student-athletes in a confidential setting, including initial evaluations, interventions, and overall treatment planning on psychological issues most salient to eligible varsity student-athletes.
    • Provide individual, group, and team performance enhancement counseling services related to skills needed for optimal performance.
    • Assess and respond to needs for crisis intervention with individuals and groups within the athletic department.
    • Provide clinical consultation and supervision for Athletic Counseling Team staff as required by the State of Michigan’s Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
    • Coordinate referrals to outside resources for mental health, substance abuse, and performance psychology / counseling services for varsity student-athletes.
    • Assess the need for ADHD/ADD evaluation/referral, which may include psychological testing.
    • Provide consultation with coaches on individual and team dynamics.
    • Promote a culture where student-athletes choose to make a commitment to lifelong health and wellness and personal and professional development.
    • Meet with prospective varsity student-athletes to promote the benefits and services of the Athletic Counseling Team.
    • Participate on a multi-disciplinary team within the athletic department in the management of student-athletes with significant mental health issues, eating disorders, concussions, etc.
    • Participate in the development, implementation and ongoing execution of training and development initiatives for student-athletes including, but not limited to annual programming that reaches all student-athletes on the topics of Drugs and Alcohol Abuse, Sexual Misconduct/Harassment and Bystander Accountability.
    • Maintain a strong rapport with multiple constituencies including; undergraduate and graduate student-athletes, coaches, Michigan Athletics departments and team members, faculty, on-campus resource centers, alumni, former letter-winners, parents, donors, potential employers, and other strategic partners.
    • Establish and maintain collaborative alliances with multiple stakeholders at the University of Michigan.
    • Use technology and social media to foster an effective and efficient overall experience for student-athletes and department team members.
    • Monitor and determine the effectiveness of programs, policies, and procedures.
    • Monitor and determine effectiveness of screening protocols for student-athletes.
    • Coordinate and approve clinic schedules and staff hours on a monthly basis.
    • Assist with coverage of Athletic Department events and trainings hosted by other departments.
    • Assist in the development of programs for student workers, interns, volunteers, practicum students, graduate assistants, residents, etc.
    • Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable, and culturally diverse.
    • Coordination and administration of medical documentation per standards set forth by CMS in the MiChart electronic medical record system.
    • Coordination and development of continuous quality improvement (CQI) metrics and outcomes.
    • Assist with special projects as assigned in cooperation with the Department’s Development Office, regarding donor and student-athlete support.
    • Work in conjunction with university Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) when appropriate for case management and care of student-athletes.
    • Attend assigned team practices, competitions, and other team events as needed and/or directed.
    • Assist with developing and reviewing the annual budget and ensuring budgetary compliance through efficient financial management.
    • Assist with the research and determination of current and future needs within the department then assist with the development of detailed proposals as directed.
    • Assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
    • Assist the Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director with special projects as needed and/or directed.
    • Participate in committees, or other initiatives as assigned.
    • Represent the University of Michigan and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at University, State, Regional, and national conferences and/or meetings as assigned.
    • Contribute to the development of an environment for team members and student-athletes that is healthy, safe, equitable and culturally diverse.
    • Adhere to the rules and regulations of the University, The Big Ten Conference and the NCAA. Report all Big Ten or NCAA violations involving the University to departmental compliance personnel.
    • Provide a high level of mental health care, customer service, and communication at all times to all entities.
    • Other duties as assigned.


    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    • Supervision, education, and preceptor of professional students from various University academic programs.
    • Supervise and provide comprehensive leadership and education for all members of the Athletic Counseling Team and other Student-Athlete Health & Welfare personnel as assigned.

    Travel:

    •  Travel with assigned team(s) as needed and/or directed.

    Required Qualifications*

    • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Psychology or directly related field.
    • State licensure in field of practice.
    • Minimum five (5) years’ experience in higher education setting or other related setting.
    • Demonstrated ability to consider and address the needs and concerns of persons from culturally diverse backgrounds including students of color, international students, LGBTQ+, and non-traditional students and to foster sensitivity to a diverse and inclusive campus culture.
    • An entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to create programs and services to further drive program enhancements.
    • Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
    • Compliance and understanding of Big Ten Conference and NCAA rules.
    • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with the ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate, and advance strategic plans that support student-athletes and the missions of the Athletic Counseling Team, Student-Athlete Health and Welfare, and the Athletic Department.
    • Ability to follow policies and procedures set forth by the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
    • Working knowledge of electronic medical record system.
    • Supervisory experience.
    • Must be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, coaches, student-athletes, physicians, and other allied health personnel.
    • Must possess problem-solving and critical thinking skills, innovation and creativity, adaptability, initiative and stress tolerance to various situations.
    • Must provide a high level of customer service.
    • Ability to work long hours, including early mornings, late nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, non-traditional work hours, extended periods of time without days off, travel, and be on-call as a regular part of the position.
    • Ability to move heavy objects, stand for long periods, work in various environmental conditions, and assist injured individuals on / off playing surfaces; and
    • Proven ability to multi-task, work independently, prioritize, and complete tasks in a timely manner.

    Desired Qualifications*

    • Knowledge and understanding of eating disorders/disordered eating assessment and treatment
    • Knowledge and understanding of unique aspects of student-athlete population
    • Knowledge of, and ability to conduct, alcohol and other drug assessments and ability to work with the student-athlete population on these issues
    • Post-graduate training in Sport Psychology (i.e. CMPC, IMGCA, etc.)
