Thermal Analysis and Test Section Supervisor

Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab

Job Description

Description

Are you driven to lead a highly technical, collaborative, and diverse team in the best group at APL?

Do you enjoy the challenges related to modeling and analysis of aerothermal heating?

Do you enjoy leveraging your excellent understanding of the BMD system and hypersonic missile phenomenology to work closely with various existing and new government sponsors, PM’s, and PjM’s to anticipate future needs?

Are you interested in being part of a team with expertise that span the disciplines of aerospace and mechanical engineering and physics?

Are you passionate about advocating for individuals to ensure they find their work fulfilling and meaningful?

If so, we are looking for a leader like you to join our team as the Section Supervisor of our Thermal Analysis and Test Section (A1C-5). We are seeking an energetic, motivated individual to lead a section of highly talented engineers that are involved in design, thermal analysis, and ground/flight testing for cutting edge programs. We strive to foster an environment of innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration. As a member of our team, you will ensure our staff provide high quality contributions to our sponsor's most critical challenges.

As a section supervisor, you will lead one of ten sections that make up our group of over sixty engineers who specialize in mechanical & aerospace engineering. You will also be part of the larger Air and Missile Defense Sector that is focused on innovative solutions to our Nation’s most difficult challenges posed by evolving aircraft, missile, and surface threats, as well as new hypersonic threats.

As the A1C-5 Section Supervisor, you will:

  • Be well versed, and be able to direct staff, in the key phenomena related to aerothermal heating, radiation transport of chemically active multiphase flows in thermal non-equilibrium and ablating/mechanically eroding TPS analyses of hypersonic vehicles, and Aegis MK-41 launchers.
  • Utilize an excellent understanding of both future threat hypersonic vehicles and the Ballistic Missile Defense weapon system to leverage A1C’s internally developed thermal solvers to develop thermal designs for the next generation interceptors.
  • Lead the section’s efforts to recruit and hire highly qualified staff to meet sponsor demands by drafting personnel requisitions, interviewing candidates, and providing input for hiring decisions.
  • Communicate often and effectively with sponsors, staff and leadership.
  • Work closely with PM’s, PjM’s and leads across the lab, government sponsors and contractors to expand opportunities for A1C to contribute.
  • Inspire your section staff and influence their products to enable innovative, affordable, and effective solutions to critical gaps.
  • Ensure the proper execution of tasks, quality and timeliness of technical products through the application of best research and engineering practices.
  • Document efforts and deliver presentations to internal project teams and sponsors.
  • Work with staff to generate IRaD proposals to position the group for future opportunities.
  • Actively engage and collaborate with section staff to encourage presentations in professional societies and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop reclassification letters, recognition awards, and the associated supportive documentation to recognize your staff.
  • Support the group through implementation of Laboratory, Sector, and Branch policies and procedures.
