About the Department

The Department of Computer Science is an academic teaching and research department in the College of Engineering. It is a large and complex unit that encompasses research intensive, teaching intensive and professional activities. It is one of the largest such departments in the nation by the number of faculty and students, and its total budget and size are comparable to, or larger than, a number of NC State University colleges and divisions.

Essential Job Duties

As a faculty member for the Department of Computer Science, your responsibilities would include, but not be limited to:
  • Participate in both undergraduate and graduate instruction.
  • Attract external funding for and conduct research program supportive of the Department’s thrust areas (Software Engineering, Privacy, Security, Systems, Networking, Data Driven Sciences, Geospatial Analytics, Artificial Intelligence and Advance Technology for the Digital Transformation of Education, Cyper-Physical Systems, Algorithms, Graphics, Games; on a continued basis.
  • Direct graduate student research in the different areas of Computer Science.

Other Responsibilities

Execute other position related duties, including teaching of other courses, as well as faculty service and other duties identified by the Department Head.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to academic and research excellence, and an outstanding research record commensurate with the expectations of a major research university.
  • Excellent teaching skills and an ability to attract external funding for and conduct research programs supportive of the Department’s thrust areas.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills are required.

Preferred Qualifications

Exceptional candidates in all areas of Computer Science will be considered, but of particular interest are candidates specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology for the Digital Transformation of Education; Cyber-Physical Systems; Cybersecurity; Software Engineering; and Theoretical Computer Science . 

While the department expects to hire faculty predominantly at the Assistant Professor level, candidates with exceptional research records are encouraged to apply for a senior position.
