Position Description:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a Research Intern to advance research in a Women’s Health research lab focused on improving the health of mothers and children before, during, and after pregnancy. The ideal candidate will be able to function very independently but also work well as a member of a large team.


Characteristics Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform research activities based upon protocols developed by other research staff or principal investigator of the research project.
  • Read and review articles as directed.
  • Read, understand, and implement protocols.
  • Process and store biological specimens following protocols.
  • Perform lab maintenance tasks including autoclaving, refilling supplies, cleaning glassware, emptying biohazard tubs, etc.
  • Arrange, plan, and execute daily activities to prepare for research protocols.
  • Set up and operate research materials or equipment.
  • Assist with clinical data extraction and organization.
  • Perform procedures assuring fidelity to protocols.
  • Adhere to safety and compliance guidelines.
  • Collect, record and consolidate data as directed by the Principal Investigator.
  • Track progress of research activities.
  • Adhere to Quality Assurance protocols to maintain validity and integrity of research data.
  • Collect and track data, perform data entry for reports and maintain records of methods used.
  • Prepare materials for reports.
  • May present results/findings at team and departmental meetings.

Education Requirement:

Bachelors of Arts or Science Degree


Required Qualifications:
  • Able to use and maintain general lab equipment
  • Able to use Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Training and supervising staff and students
  • Experience working in a clinical or research lab
  • Writing and editing Standard Operating Procedures
  • Skilled in the use of Prism, Endnote, Cytovision, and Adobe software products
  • Experience in Database Management
  • Trained in laboratory safety and procedures, including BSL2, blood borne pathogens, and sterile techniques
  • Skilled in cryopreservation/snap freezing techniques of cells and tissues
  • Skilled in Mammalian and human cell culture- primary and cell lines
