Eastern Shore Community College is a member of the Virginia Community College System. The College serves the residents of Accomack County and Northampton County as a two-year institution of higher learning. Operating under policies established by the State Board for Community Colleges and the Eastern Shore Community College Board, the college is financed primarily with state funds, supplemented by contributions from the two counties and the Eastern Shore Community College Foundation.
The VCCS Chancellor’s College Success Coach Initiative is intended to increase student persistence and attainment of success measures aligned with Achieve 2015 and beyond through the use of college success coaches. This initiative leverages the unique strengths and success strategies of ESCC and promotes opportunities for cross-college information exchange.
The College Success Coach is responsible for working with a target population of college students to provide direct support and enhance their success in college. Interventions are aimed at fostering persistence leading to success-intermediate success and ultimately, graduation, transfer, and/or a career readiness certificate. This position communicates with faculty and staff in multiple college departments to ensure students have access to resources and support necessary for completion of their academic program. This position works with others to capture relevant data on student communications, interactions and success strategies. The newly hired positions will advance the College’s One Door initiative by being cross-trained and serving multiple units of the college. Some success coaches are responsible for student engagement through mentoring programs and coordinating tutors embedded into courses.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- Strong communication skills with ability to build relationships
- Demonstrated understanding of ESCC’s mission
- Demonstrated ability to develop individualized academic plans
- Demonstrated ability to develop academic and career counseling skills
- Demonstrated ability to provide and refer students to a range of academic and nonacademic support services
- Demonstrated ability to work with faculty and staff
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media
- Demonstrated strong presentation and facilitation skills
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field such as counseling, human resources, social services, or adult education
- Experience working in higher education
- Experience as a manager or project leader
- Experience with mentoring or tutoring programs or student activities
- Work experience in counseling or academic coaching
- Demonstrated knowledge of specific needs of community college students
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial literacy, financial aid, and scholarships
- A current driver’s license to cover assignments throughout the community college service region, as necessary to the job.
