Duties and Responsibilities

Application Pool Notice

Laredo College continuously accepts applications for part-time (adjunct) instructors to create a pool of candidates for each session/semester.  Applications will be reviewed and positions will be filled based on department needs. Applications received for this pool will remain active for one year. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

The Adjunct Instructor is responsible for technical, instructional and clerical duties required to support the instructional goals and objectives and mission of the Regional Law Enforcement Academy.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities  

  1. Develop lesson plans and any documentation required by TCOLE, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Southern Association of Colleges.
  2. Assist in the set-up, removal, and storage of all equipment used in training.
  3. Instruct the mandated Texas Commission on Law Enforcement continuing education courses, when needed. 
  4. Provide Instruction for in-service, intermediate and advanced and specialized courses as needed.
  5. Maintain certifications current in areas to be taught (defensive tactics, firearms, etc.)
  6. Must be able to demonstrate ability in working with diverse groups of instructors
  7. Must be able to work with others in instructional setting in a team concept and positive environment
  8. Must have personal transportation and be willing to travel from South Campus to main campus and through the Council of Government (COG); Webb County, Zapata, Jim Hogg and Starr County.
  9. Performs other duties assigned by the Law Enforcement Academy Director

 

Qualifications/Certifications/Licenses/Skills

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Texas Peace Officer, Telecommunicator, Jailer, TCOLE Basic Instructor proficiency.
  • Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE): Basic Peace Officer License, Telecommunicator or Jailer and Basic Instructor, must meet subject matter expert requirements.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice.
  • Certifications in Advanced Instructor (TCOLE), Telecommunication Supervisor, TCIC Associate Trainer Certification, First Aid CPR Instructor, working with diverse groups, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Firearms, Standardized Field Sobriety Instructor, Baton Instructor, O. C. Instructor, CIT Instructor, Fitness, USA Weightlifting, CrossFit Level 1.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have knowledge of the operation and control of the types of computer systems used by the Department. 
  • Must have working knowledge of micro-soft word, excel and PowerPoint. Must be able, with training; operate Firearms Training Simulator, lab tutorial and all aspects of the indoor firing range. 
  • Must be able to articulate in a classroom setting.

Supervision Exercised:

Law Enforcement Academy Cadets.

Supervision Received:

Direct Supervision is received from Law Enforcement Academy Director.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a standard office environment. Work-inside a well-lighted and air-conditioned area most of the time. The noise level in the work environments is usually quiet to moderate.

Safety:

Required to work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

Special Conditions:

Immediate supervisor may assign other duties. May be required to work outside regular working hours, as needed. May be required to work at a different college work site or campus as needed.
