Walla Walla Community College is accepting applications to fill five (5) part-time roles of English Language Acquisition (ELA) Instructor located at Garrison Middle School in Walla Walla, WA.

General Responsibilities:

Provide English Language instruction in stand-alone courses or as part of the various Adult HS Completion offerings. The position includes demonstrated and accurate knowledge of effective language instruction and adult education learning theory and teaching standards to ensure students advance in command of the English language and readiness skills concurrently.

 

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Plan and organize instruction using the College and Career Readiness Standards in Adult Education and assessments such as CASAS for competency measures as appropriate.
  • Employ appropriate teaching and learning strategies that support cultural diversity and non-discrimination to communicate subject matter aligned with students’ learning goals.
  • Encourage the development of communication skills and higher-order thinking skills through appropriate activities and assignments.
  • Develop and explain methods that measure student progress toward course and program objectives.
  • Employ available instructional technology in courses as appropriate for learning outcomes.
  • Work as part of a teaching team to ensure student success in courses required for a transition to career technical or academic programs and/or work.
  • Participation in programs and activities, including faculty professional development workshops and other relevant program conferences or training that lead to professional growth as required and for compliance with grant-funded programs.
  • Coordinates Pre/Post CASAS assessments, WABERS intake forms, and other documentation required by the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges with program staff in Access & Opportunity.

  • Excellent English speaking, writing, listening, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrate successful teaching in face-to-face, online and hybrid environments.
  • Demonstrate experience facilitating the success of students who represent a broad range of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate interest and ability to work successfully with students, staff, and the community.
  • Intermediate-level computer competency, including Microsoft Office Applications.
  • Demonstrate ability to use technologies commonly used in instruction and office environments, including the ability to effectively use learning management systems in all class modalities.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited College or University in Adult/Developmental Education, TESOL Certificate, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited College or University in Adult/Developmental Education, TESOL Certificate, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field.
  • Experience teaching students from a range of countries, including both immigrants/refugees and international students, in the community college environment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how varied cultural perspectives affect learning and communication.
  • Knowledge of the College and Career Readiness Standards for Adult Education.
  • Demonstrate understanding and implementation of current, student-centered pedagogy using active learning.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational leadership, interpersonal, and collaborative skills.
  • Experience in assessing the effectiveness of ELA teaching methods and ELA curriculum /program changes on student engagement and success.
  • Experience in and commitment to professional development activities in ELA and related fields, such as publications, presentations, organization membership, conferences, and workshops.
  • Experience teaching online.
  • Experience working with learning standards and the CASAS Assessment.

 

Conditions/Terms of Employment 

This is a part-time instruction assignment contingent on enrollment and located at Garrison Middle School. Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful employment to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment and provide transcripts. Candidate may be subject to a criminal history background check as a condition for consideration of employment. The college is a tobacco free institution. Walla Walla Community College requires all employees to participate in direct deposit for payment of salary.

Compensation

Compensation for adjunct instruction is contingent on enrollment and paid in accordance with the contract between the WWCC Board of Trustees and the WWCC Association for Higher Education.
