Accountant III, Student Financial Services

Job Description

Reporting directly to the Assistant Bursar, the Accountant III will perform a variety of detail-oriented roles in support of Student Financial Services. This position will be primarily tasked with processing transactions, preparing daily deposits and feed reconciliations, and may manage the student billing and dunning processes, third party billing, the student health insurance program, and the review and assignment of delinquent accounts to collections and intercept. The Accountant III will also provide superior customer service via phone, email, in-person and virtual interactions with both students and families, and will be expected to provide backup support and service to Student Central, Massasoit's one-stop center for enrollment services.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist the Executive Director and Assistant Bursar in the planning, organization and administration of all Student Account operations.
  • Review cashier sessions for accuracy and prepare daily bank deposit.
  • Perform daily reconciliation of all transactions that are fed to Finance.
  • Provide guidance and training to cashiers and other departments, and assist with cashiering functions; develop training materials as needed.
  • Coordinate the production and mailing of student invoices and past due statements.
  • Assign outstanding student accounts to collection agency and the MA state intercept program.
  • Review collection agency and intercept reporting and reconcile to Ellucian Banner, which is Massasoit's ERP system.
  • Monitor, reconcile and invoice 3rd party agency accounts. Communicate with sponsors and agencies as required regarding outstanding receivables.
  • Perform detailed analysis and review of student health insurance charges and payments; upload students to insurance provider, address students that have not addressed insurance charges, review and reconcile vendor invoices.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to students, parents, sponsors, staff, and faculty while maintaining a high degree of confidentiality.
  • Counsel and advise students, parents and other interest parties regarding matters involving student accounts. This position requires a broad knowledge of college policies and procedures in Student Accounts, Financial Aid and the Registrar's Office.
  • Assist with the development, coordination and execution of collection protocol through written and telephone contact.
  • Create financial reports using Banner, Microsoft Excel and Argos reporting software.
  • Assist in the implementation of new technologies to improve administrative processes; assist in the drafting, reviewing, improving and implementation of accounting policies, procedures, and internal control processes.
  • Develop and implement new strategies and procedures to improve efficiency and collection results; edit and develop new reports to increase process efficiencies.
  • Represent Student Financial Services within the Massasoit community, including but not limited to new student orientations, open houses and enrollment and recruitment events. This position requires occasional overtime, weekend and evening work, particularly during peak registration periods, as well as occasional public speaking.
  • Hire, train and supervise work study students.

Job Requirements:


Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in accounting or auditing, of which at least (B) one year must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience. *
II. A Bachelor's degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience. *
III. A Graduate degree with a major in accounting, business administration or business management may be substituted for the required experience. *
  • Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.

Qualifications Required at Hire:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting.
  • Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of accounting data, to draw conclusions and to make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to write concisely, to express thoughts clearly and to develop ideas in logical sequence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with and supporting a culturally diverse population.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
  • Experience processing payments and preparing bank deposits.
  • Demonstrated experience with computerized office systems, including; Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Access, Excel, Outlook, etc.; fluency in Excel preferred.
  • Functional experience with Banner, or similar ERP systems.
  • Ability to integrate analytical thinking and creativity to continuously improve processes.
  • Experience working in a community college and/or higher education environment.
  • TouchNet cashiering experience.
  • Knowledge of federal and state policies regarding financial aid.
  • Understanding of accounts receivable and collection practices, particularly in a higher education environment.

Position Status: AFSCME union position, full-time, state funded with benefits

Hours: 37.5 hours per week. This position may be eligible for telework in accordance in with the College's telework policy.

Salary: $2,132.21 bi-weekly ($55,437.46 annually), Grade 18 Step 1
