Summary

This job opening is for a Temporary Clinical Care Coordinator- LACTATION CONSULTANT position

These positions are not covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U of M Professional Nurse Council.

* In addition:
Unit- based temporary employees who have worked 400 hours in a calendar year then become a Per Diem employee and have an obligation to pay dues or service fees as covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U of M Professional Nurse Council.

* Once the employee meets the 400 hour threshold, they then are a union member for the duration of employment as Per Diem.

Responsibilities*

The Lactation Consultant will provide expert nursing care to assess, plan, implement, evaluate and monitor the care of breastfeeding couplets in multiple inpatient units and an ambulatory care site, within Michigan Medicine.

Supervision:
General supervision is received from the Clinical Nursing Director for the Brandon NICU. Functional supervision is typically exercised over framework RNs, Allied Health and other support staff.

* Assess, plan, implement, evaluate and monitor the care of breastfeeding couplets in Brandon Newborn ICU, Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital (VVWH), PICU, PCTU, the Mott acute care units of 12 East, 12 West, 11 West and 7 East, Peds Emergency Department, Adult University Hospital, and the Lactation Consultant Clinic.
* Provide expert consultative services, and act as a primary resource to all members of the health care teams within Michigan Medicine.
* Document patient care via via MiChart utilizing established templates. * Investigate, design, develop, evaluate and modify as necessary patient education materials to maintain an evidence based focus.
* Design and evaluate the effectiveness of parent discharge education materials in various media formats.
* Participate in planning, facilitating and conducting breastfeeding conferences and inservices for staff, students and other health care professionals.
* Provide breastfeeding workshops, inservices and classes for nurses and physicians in both formal and informal settings for Brandon Newborn ICU, Von Voigtlander Women's Hospital, Mott Hospital and School of Nursing.
* Facilitate lactation consult observation day for pediatric residents, medical students, dietary students/interns, and nursing students with a special interest/focus on breastfeeding.
* Conduct "lactation rounds" for all new VVWH and Brandon NICU nursing staff.
* Provide community support with a "warm line" that mothers can call with breastfeeding questions after they are discharged from the hospital.
* Execute consultation and act as a primary resource for questions related to medications and breastmilk, both on the medical campus and in the community.
* Participate in the development and maintenance of quality assurance programs and activities.
* Assist in the collection of data for research studies

Required Qualifications*

Candidate must hold a current licensure as Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
*Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN)
*Certification as a Lactation Consultant by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC)
*Five (5) or more years of nursing experience as an RN.
*Demonstrated expert nursing knowledge in the care of the breast feeding family population with five or more years recent RN experience in the maternal child field.
*Candidate must possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, to include strong facilitative interpersonal skills, skills to successfully resolve conflicts, excellent problem solving skills and ability to provide direct and effective feedback; as evidenced by previous/current employment experience and demonstrated in annual evaluations.
*Self directed, reliable, demonstrates initiative and motivation to work independently as evidenced by previous/current employment experience and demonstrated in annual evaluations.
*Demonstrated ability to work in a team atmosphere utilizing effective delegation skills as evidenced by previous/current employment experience and demonstrated in annual evaluations.
*Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with all members of the health care team, as evidenced by previous/current employment experience and demonstrated in annual evaluations.

Desired Qualifications*

1-2 years recent experience as IBCLC.
*Ability to utilize word processing and data base programs such as Microsoft Word/Excel and PowerPoint to create new documents, enter data, generate graphs and produce presentations.

Location: 8 West, Brandon Newborn Intensive Care Unit
