Position Summary

 

ABOUT THE COLLEGE:

Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

The English Division of Green River College (Auburn, WA) seeks candidates for an adjunct position to teach ENGL250: US Indigenous Literatures for Spring 2023 (with the potential for teaching in subsequent quarters depending on availability). The course may be taught ißn an online asynchronous or hybrid format, comprising both face-to-face sessions and the Canvas LMS platform, depending on the candidates preference. Candidates may also have the opportunity to teach ENGL&101 with a focus on Native American and Indigenous issues in subsequent quarters.

The English Division offers courses in developmental composition and reading, transfer-level composition, literature, cultural studies, humanities, creative writing, film, and study skills. The mission of the English Division is to support our students in developing skills and critical approaches that will enable them to engage and transform the world around them. The Division is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, staff, and administration. We integrate diverse literary and cultural texts in our curriculum, affirm students’ multiple literacies, and foster pedagogical innovation. The English Division promotes a culture of mutual respect and collegiality among 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 35 adjunct faculty, who bring a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. The Division’s impact and leadership extend to the campus and community, including through the operation of the Writing Center.

 

Position Responsibilities

 

Course Description—ENGL250: US Indigenous Literatures

A focus on the literary, oral, and cultural traditions of U.S. indigenous communities, including Native Americans, Alaska Natives, and Pacific Islanders. Students will critically read, view, interpret, discuss, and write about works of fiction, non-fiction, drama, poetry, and/or autobiography, as well as other cultural genres such as songs, chants, music, dance, and/or film. Students will examine how Indigenous writers, storytellers, and artists draw upon traditional forms to develop innovative expressions, while situating creative works in relation to historical, political, and cultural contexts. Prerequisite: Eligible for ENGL 099. Satisfies a Humanities and Diversity Course Requirement for the AA degree.

Preferred candidates should also have the capacity and interest to teach a composition/writing class that intersects with one or more of the following areas of expertise: indigenous rhetorics, indigenous literatures, Native American language and literacy, Native American history, Native American activism and social justice, and intersectional identities within indigenous communities, among others.

Candidates should be passionate about teaching and learning and committed to the mission of community colleges. Candidates should bring experience and expertise that is especially suited to enhancing the success of under-represented and marginalized student populations.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in English literature, Rhetoric and Composition, Native American Studies, Pacific Islander Studies, Ethnic Studies, Multicultural Studies, or related interdisciplinary fields.
  • Successful college-level teaching experience relevant to the critical study of Native American, Alaska Native, Pacific Islander and ethnic literatures and cultures.
  • Experience and expertise in working with Native American communities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching composition classes at the college level.
  • Experience with online/hybrid teaching using Canvas or equivalent LMS platforms.
  • Ability to teach classes with a face-to-face component on Green River College’s main campus

 

Supplemental Information

 

This is a part-time, nontenured, quarter-to-quarter assignment. Salary is dependent upon the number of contact hours for the assignment as provided in the collective bargaining agreement with the Green River United Faculty. Official transcripts documenting degrees earned and relevant coursework will be required upon hire.

Adjunct faculty may become eligible for benefits if they work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only).

Newly-hired adjunct faculty are eligible for PEBB insurance benefits when they have taught 50 percent or more of a full-time workload* for two consecutive quarters at one or more public higher education institutions, going on benefits the start of the second quarter at 50% or more. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under the Public Employees Benefits Board.

Adjunct faculty who initially meet the State Board Retirement Plan Eligibility criteria after June 30, 2011 are given the option to participate in the State Board Plan (TIAA-CREF) or to participate in TRS 3, and have 30 days to make a choice. The eligibility threshold for participation in the State Board Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF) is 50 percent of a full-time workload* at one or more college districts or the State Board for two consecutive quarters. There may be other options available under limited circumstances.

Leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.

  • Half time is defined as one-half of the full-time academic workload as determined by each institution, except that half time for community and technical colleges faculty employees is governed by RCW 28B.50.489.
