Job Summary

Love technology and looking for a great working environment at a community college? A position as an Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist may be the right job for you! The Disability Resource Center (DRC) is a fun collaborative department within Student Affairs that is focused on access and inclusion for students with disabilities. AT Lab Specialists are the technology-loving arm of the DRC department. Main duties include: Tracking and checking out equipment, providing accommodated testing and being a reader/scribe or classroom assistant for students, providing training to students, staff, and faculty on assistive technology, answering phones, scheduling appointments, providing reader/scribe support for students, scanning and attaching documents, documenting services rendered, data entry, filing, and light lifting. Flexibility is essential for this collaborative team.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

• Visually review and compare inaccessible course materials to create new accessible materials in various formats.
• Demonstrate and train students, staff and faculty on assistive technologies: SmartPen, Kurzweil, Otter.ai, MS Dictation, etc.
• Answer phones to address questions and make appointments.
• Track and maintain adaptive equipment inventory: charging, clearing data, troubleshooting, etc.
• Provide assistive software support: installation, user account administration, and troubleshooting.
• Provide accommodated testing for students to include scheduling, requesting tests, enlarging or scanning documents as needed in the accessible format as approved for student.
• Document student interactions in department database.
• Run database reports and review Excel spreadsheets.
• Maintain accurate accommodation records on department spreadsheets on SharePoint to effectively collaborate work with other Service Providers.
• Install and troubleshoot assistive software on AT Lab and student computers.
• Act as a reader/scribe for a student in course lectures and on tests, which requires effective listening, legible handwriting, typing, clear verbal communication, and ability to read college level material aloud with ease.
• Act as a classroom assistant for a student with approved accommodations.
• Assist student with setting up and taking down workstation with appropriate kitchen tools and supplies.
• Assist student with washing, cleaning, preparing ingredients for food and beverages following kitchen safety procedures following food handling health and safety standards.
• Assist with removing rubbish, washing bins, and disinfecting the entire kitchen to meet health and safety standards.
• Independently prioritize, problem-solve, and effectively communicate work responsibilities within the department.
• Some travel is necessary between campuses.
• Other duties as required.

Preferred Qualifications

Food Handler’s Permit.
3 months culinary kitchen experience.
Experience working with people with disabilities.
Knowledge of accessible/assistive technology.
Ability to proficiently communicate in Spanish.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent.

• Proficiency using and learning new technologies.
• Ability to document and maintain confidential and sensitive information.
• Ability to read college level material with ease.
• Ability to write dictated material.
• Ability to maintain work appropriate boundaries.
• Ability to maintain good working relationships across the College with students, faculty and staff.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications.
• Knowledge of working in a culinary setting.
• Ability to follow food safety and health standards.
• Ability to lift up to 25lbs on a regular basis.
• Ability to listen, and verbalize clear verbal communication with ease.
• Maintain a positive work environment as regular collaboration and trust between student and instructor.
• Uphold student confidentiality in accordance with ADA and FERPA regulations.
• Follow the DRC staff guidelines, be dependable, reliable, and exhibit professionalism at all times.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
• Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
