Job Description

The Office of Information Technologies (OIT), within the University of Notre Dame, is seeking a Network Design Specialist – Wireless Engineer. Join our collaborative team and lead the opportunity of making our University “the” most elite, reliable and robust Wireless campus in the United States. You will be provided the resources to optimize the current environment of 10,000 wireless access points, and you will be the expert to design, plan and lead our future growth, indoors and outdoors, and determine standards and future refresh cycles. In this exciting role, you will partner with all areas on campus to ensure we provide the needed wireless experience to support a world class faculty and student base, a committed to excellence staff, and endless visitors to campus taking in the historic sites, Midwest landscape, and a world renown football program.

As the Network Design Specialist – Wireless Engineer, you will be the subject matter expert of all things related to 802.11 wireless and will be responsible for the wireless experience on campus from designing the infrastructure to ensuring an excellent end-user experience. This includes providing leadership to complete a variety of wireless projects, collaborating with all campus IT stakeholders, mentoring other network staff and engineers, solving technical/infrastructure client questions, and providing daily engineering support of the OIT network infrastructure. Having a working knowledge of switching, routing, DNS/DHCP, firewall, VPN, and other networking components is preferred and helpful. Participation in an on-call rotation schedule is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years experience in a campus type environment supporting Aruba and Cisco technologies. Minimum CCNA certification.
  • Strong analytic, problem-solving, and conceptual skills; and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven knowledge of RADIUS, Cisco IOS, Routing, TCP/IP, DNS and DHCP protocols and services.
  • Proven knowledge of established IEEE Ethernet, IEEE 802.3 / 802.11 standards and interoperability issues with BGP.


Preferred Qualifications

NSEE/CS or advanced degree or equivalent experience with enterprise networking.

Advanced Wireless Networking Certification, Cisco/Aruba preferred or equivalent experience
