Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The University of Maryland Department of Physics invites applications for a tenured/tenure track faculty position in Biological Physics. At the University of Maryland, cutting-edge research in Biological Physics is carried out by a diverse range of faculty, research scientists, graduate and undergraduate students. Researchers tackle a variety of topics such as mechanobiology, immunophysics, neural networks, and AI enabled biological physics across scales, and have access to state of the art microscopy, nanotechnology, and fabrication facilities. Biological Physics research is supported through several institutes, including the Institute for Physical Science and Technology (IPST) and the Brain and Behavior Institute (BBI). The Department of Physics seeks candidates at any career level who have the potential or demonstrated ability to build a vibrant research program in biological physics. Our emphasis will be to add strength to our existing experimental biophysics research program, but we welcome exceptional experimentalists and theorists in any area of biological physics. The preferred starting date for the position is August of 2023.

The University of Maryland’s physics department is nationally ranked, with state-of-the-art laboratory facilities. UMD is conveniently located inside the national capital beltway, and is near to the National Institutes of Health main research campus in Bethesda and several other national laboratories that offer unique state of the art facilities. UMD has particularly close relationships with the National Cancer Institute (https://ipst.umd.edu/research/nci) and many researchers at UMD have collaborations with NIH Intramural researchers.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
A Ph.D. in physics/biophysics or a related discipline and postdoctoral experience in biological physics.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Good teaching, particularly in settings with diverse groups, is a high priority of the Department, and a potential for teaching excellence is necessary. 
  • Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research, have good communication skills, and have the potential for leadership within the research community.
