Summary of Position

The Spatial Data Technician/Data Processor will help support the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping’s researchers and staff on working with and visualizing geospatial data. As the Center’s staff and researchers collect and work with a wide variety of data types, this position will require an individual with a strong working knowledge of QPS’s Qimera, Blue Marble’s Global Mapper, and ESRI’s ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro software packages to assist personnel with processing and visualization of their data. The individual should also have a working knowledge of assessing, ingesting, and integrating bathymetry and backscatter datasets into large data syntheses. The position will also require knowledge of working with ESRI’s Enterprise software, including publishing map services, creating web based applications, and setting access permissions of these services. Basic familiarity with processing and analyzing bathymetry, backscatter, and water column data are required and knowledge of programing using at least one of ArcGIS model builder, Python, or MATLAB, etc. is desirable (knowledge or familiarity with two or more is preferred). Good communication skills are required as the individual will need to coordinate with staff and research faculty to both assist and advise on the proper means of processing, validating, and visualizing geospatial data. Seagoing opportunities may be available but not required.

Other minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 4 years of experience in Marine Sciences, Geospatial Sciences, or Ocean Engineering field.
  • Strong knowledge of GIS systems (desktop and enterprise) and multibeam sonar data processing
  • Ability to validate and integrate data into bathymetric syntheses
  • Strong communication/networking skills to facilitate working the staff and researchers at the Center
  • Strong familiarity with industry standard software such as ESRI’s ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro, QPS’s Qimera, and BlueMarble’s Global Mapper is required
  • At least four years practical experience working with geospatial data
  • Experience with the generation of final multibeam data products including cleaned and gridded bathymetry and backscatter products
  • Strong working knowledge using the Windows operating systems

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge with ESRI’s ArcGIS Enterprise, including publishing web services, setting sharing permissions, and generating Web Applications
  • Knowledge in designing and implementing ArcGIS model builder and ArcGIS python routines for processing geospatial data
